“She said Margaret threatened to accuse her of stealing medication if she spoke about what she had witnessed.”
Ethan’s face hardened.
“Where is she?”
“New Mexico.”
Claire whispered, “Does she know what happened to the will?”
“I believe she knows more than she told me.”
That evening, they returned home under an orange September sunset.
The backyard had been cleaned.
The broken serving rack was gone.
So were the glasses and bloodless traces of violence.
Only one thing remained unchanged.
The security camera above the patio door.
Claire stopped beneath it.
Ethan followed her gaze.
“Ugly little thing saved us.”
“No.”
She looked at him.
“It told the truth.”
Inside, Ethan’s phone rang.
Richard Cole again.
This time, the news was worse.
The auditors had found payments routed through five shell companies.
Three led to Vanessa.
One led to a contractor associated with Margaret.
The fifth led somewhere unexpected.
A nursing services corporation in New Mexico.
Claire and Ethan stared at each other.
“Maria,” Claire said.
Richard heard her through the speaker.
“That’s what I thought. But the payments began after Mr. Bennett died.”
“How much?” Ethan asked.
“Twenty-five thousand dollars every three months.”
“From who?”
“The authorization code belongs to your mother.”
Claire felt a sick realization.
“Those aren’t payments.”
Ethan looked at her.
“They’re hush money.”
The following morning, Maria Alvarez answered Ethan’s call.
He introduced himself.
She immediately began crying.
“Mr. Bennett.”
“Maria, I need to ask about my father.”
“I’m sorry.”
“For what?”
“I should have told you.”
“Told me what?”
Her breathing shook through the phone.
“The night before your father went to the hospital, your mother and sister were in his bedroom.”
Ethan gripped the phone.
“What happened?”
“They were screaming.”
“What about?”
“The papers.”
“The will?”
“Yes.”
Claire closed her eyes.
Maria continued.
“Your father told Vanessa she had stolen from the company. Mrs. Bennett said he was confused because of the medication.”
“Was he?”
“No.”
Maria’s voice strengthened.
“He knew exactly what he was saying.”
“What happened to the will?”
“I saw your sister take an envelope from his desk.”
Ethan looked at Claire.
“And my mother?”
“She watched her.”
A silence followed.
Then Maria said the words that shattered the last remaining excuse Ethan had tried to preserve.
“Your father asked me to call you.”
Ethan’s face changed.
“What?”
“He told me to call you and tell you to come.”
“You didn’t.”
“No.”
“Why?”
“Your mother took my phone.”
Claire covered her mouth.
“She said if I interfered, she would destroy my career. She said no hospital in Maryland would hire me again.”
Ethan sat down.
Maria was crying again.
“I was afraid.”
Ethan looked toward his father’s photograph on the shelf.
“When did you get your phone back?”
“The next morning.”
“My father was already in the hospital.”
“Yes.”
“Why didn’t he tell me there?”
“He tried.”
Ethan remembered those final days.
His father drifting in and out of consciousness.
The unfinished sentences.
Take care of your home.
Maybe Warren had not been speaking metaphorically.
Maybe he had been trying to warn him.
Maria spoke again.
“There’s something else.”
Ethan closed his eyes.
“What?”
“I made a copy.”
“Of what?”
“The will.”
He stood so fast his chair struck the wall.
Claire stared at him.
Maria continued.
“Your father told me to photograph every page before Vanessa took it.”
“Do you still have them?”
“Yes.”
“Maria, I need those files.”
“I know.”
“Can you send them?”
She hesitated.
Then her voice became frightened.
“Not yet.”
“Why?”
“Because someone came to my house yesterday.”
Claire and Ethan looked at each other.
“Who?”
“I don’t know.”
“What did they want?”
“They asked whether I still had anything belonging to Warren Bennett.”
The room went silent.
The secret was no longer buried.
