Their argument filled the suite.
Afterward, Alexander remembered a valuable Colombian emerald he had placed in the hotel safe. He rushed to the lobby and demanded access.
The general manager met him with two security employees.
“Mr. Rivers, the jewel is listed in the notice covering disputed marital property. We cannot release it without further authorization.”
“I don’t have access to my money right now. Give me a few days.”
“We are sorry, but the outstanding account must be addressed according to hotel policy.”
Khloe stood near the elevators with tears running down her cheeks.
While they argued over the bill, I drove along a winding country road in Bucks County, Pennsylvania.
Half an hour later, the familiar farmhouse came into view—stone walls, a slate roof, and an old oak tree shading the front yard.
I parked, collected the gifts I had brought, and walked through the wooden gate.
“Who is it?” my mother-in-law called from the kitchen.
I heard a knife chopping vegetables for stew.
When I reached the doorway, Mary stood in a plaid apron. She froze when she saw me.
“Sophia? What are you doing here? Where is Alex? Aren’t you supposed to be in Maui?”
“I came to tell you something.”
I entered the kitchen and helped her slide the chopped carrots into the pot.
“Alex is still in Maui. I did not go with him.”
My father-in-law, Joe, entered from the living room carrying the Wall Street Journal.
“What happened? Did that foolish son of mine do something to you?”
“Joe, Mary, please sit down. I need to show you something.”
We gathered around the rustic kitchen table.
I opened my folder and laid the photographs of Alexander and Khloe in front of them.
“Alexander has been involved with his secretary. But that is not the worst of it. He has been moving money from our accounts and creating serious problems inside his company.”
Joe put on his reading glasses.
As he examined the statements and audit records, his weathered face turned red.
He struck his palm against the table hard enough to make the water glasses tremble.
“How could he do this? To his wife and his own company?”
Mary covered her mouth as tears filled her eyes.
“Sophia, I am so sorry.”
“I have filed for divorce. His access to the disputed accounts has been restricted.”
I looked at both of them.
“I came because you have always treated me like a daughter. I will understand if you choose to support him. He is your son.”
Mary reached across the table and clasped my hands.
“No. Loving our son does not mean excusing what he has done. We will not help him hide from the consequences.”
Joe nodded.
“You have our full support.”
He thought for a moment.
“Alexander kept old financial records in the safe in his childhood bedroom. If they are connected to this, your attorney should see them.”
They went upstairs and returned with an old bank passbook and several investment contracts.
Mary also carried a gold bracelet.
“Khloe left this here after their last visit,” she said. “I had a bad feeling about it. Take it and ask your attorney whether it matters.”
We ate bowls of beef stew while they told me stories from Alexander’s childhood. Their voices carried pain, disappointment, and disbelief.
When I left, Mary embraced me tightly.
“Take care of yourself, Sophia. This will always be a home for you.”
“Thank you. I will always love you both.”
Several days later, I sat inside the Delta Sky Club at JFK Terminal 4, beside an enormous window overlooking international arrivals.
A glass of Cabernet rested in my hand.
My phone lit up with a message from an airport contact.
The flight from Maui has landed.
I stood and moved to the railing overlooking the arrival doors.
Soon Alexander and Khloe emerged.
They looked exhausted.
Alexander wore the same linen suit, now wrinkled after days of stress and travel. Dark circles shadowed his eyes, and a rough beard covered his jaw.
Khloe’s hair was unwashed. She wore no makeup and carried only a small purse. Her designer suitcase was gone, apparently held until the dispute with the resort could be resolved.
They had barely crossed the terminal when several investigators approached and identified themselves.
Alexander stopped.
One of the officials spoke to him while another addressed Khloe. The exact allegations involved disputed corporate transfers, financial records, and documents under investigation.
Alexander’s face drained of color.
“This is a mistake,” he said. “I am the CEO of a respected company. This is a private disagreement with my wife.”
Khloe began crying.
“I was only an employee. He handled the accounts.”
Travelers slowed to observe the confrontation.
As Alexander was escorted toward a private exit, he looked up.
