His eyes found mine on the upper level.
“Sophia!”
His voice carried through the terminal.
“Sophia, please help me. We can fix this. Tell them there has been a misunderstanding.”
I remained beside the glass railing.
He continued pleading.
“I’ll give you everything. The house, the shares—whatever you want. Just stop this.”
I lifted my wine and took a slow sip.
There was nothing left to discuss.
My phone vibrated.
Mr. Vance had sent a message confirming that the financial investigation was moving forward and that the evidence would now be reviewed through the appropriate legal process.
I replied with two words.
Thank you.
Then I finished my wine and left for the New York County courthouse, where the preliminary divorce proceedings would begin.
When the courtroom doors opened, Alexander entered under supervision because of the unresolved financial case.
His arrogance had vanished.
He sat at the opposite table and avoided looking at me until the judge addressed him.
“We are here to determine the terms of the divorce and the handling of the marital estate. Mr. Rivers, what is your position?”
Alexander’s voice was hoarse.
“Your Honor, I do not want the divorce. I made serious mistakes, but I have already lost my position, my reputation, and access to everything.”
He turned toward me.
“Sophia, please. Keep the house. Keep the shares. Just do not end the marriage.”
I faced the judge.
“Your Honor, I reaffirm my petition. The marriage is irretrievably broken because of his relationship with another woman and the continuing concealment of marital funds.”
Alexander tried to interrupt.
“I have changed.”
The judge raised a hand.
“Mr. Rivers, you will allow Mrs. Mendoza to finish.”
I continued.
“I request dissolution of the marriage and an equitable ruling based on the documented transfers and attempted concealment of property.”
The judge granted the divorce and moved to the asset division.
Alexander immediately objected.
“Some of those funds and properties belong to me separately. They were acquired before the marriage.”
I nodded to Mr. Vance.
He submitted another dossier.
“Your Honor,” I said, “the supposedly separate assets were acquired or maintained using money routed from our joint accounts. The loan agreements relied upon by Mr. Rivers were created through his cousin Derek, and the Hamptons property was funded through the same network of transactions.”
The dossier contained bank statements, transfer records, property documents, and statements from the relatives involved.
Alexander stared at it in disbelief.
He had never imagined that every hidden transaction could be traced.
The judge reviewed the documents and fixed him with a stern expression.
“Mr. Rivers, the court finds that you attempted to conceal marital property and misrepresent its source. The estate will be divided in accordance with the documented contributions, losses, and compensatory claims established in the record.”
The final ruling heavily favored me and transferred the relevant marital assets into my name.
Alexander collapsed into his chair and covered his face.
There was no path back to the life he had assumed would always remain under his control.
Months later, the Pacific sun poured through the windows of my coastal home in Carmel-by-the-Sea, California.
I was watering the bougainvillea on the patio when the doorbell rang.
A courier handed me a certified envelope from the court.
I sat on a wicker sofa and opened it.
The judgment was final.
The divorce had been granted. The property deeds and authorized accounts were in my name. A compensatory award had also been entered, and recovery proceedings against Khloe’s disputed assets had been approved.
I went into the kitchen to make tea.
While the water heated, Mr. Vance called.
“Sophia, congratulations. The civil ruling is final. The deeds have been recorded, and the remaining authorized transfers are complete.”
“And the company investigation?”
“It has concluded. Alexander received a substantial federal sentence for the financial offenses established at trial. His remaining personal assets will be sold to satisfy company creditors.”
I looked toward the ocean.
“Thank you for everything.”
Not long afterward, Ray sent me an update about Khloe.
She had avoided a lengthy custodial sentence because she cooperated and had no prior record, but every recoverable asset connected to the disputed transfers had been seized or returned.
Her professional reputation was gone.
The influential friends who had celebrated her relationship with Alexander disappeared as soon as the invitations, luxury purchases, and expensive trips ended.
I turned off my phone.
I felt no satisfaction in her hardship, but I felt no responsibility for rescuing her from the consequences of choices she had made knowingly.
During the months that followed, my life filled with light.
