Ryan glanced around the cabin.
He hated public scenes.
More importantly, Ryan hated losing control.
“Sit down,” he whispered. “We’ll discuss this when we land.”
There it was.
The Mafia Boss voice.
The voice that made grown men obey.
But Ryan had forgotten something.
I wasn’t one of his soldiers.
I was his wife.
And for seven years, while everyone else saw only the terrifying Ryan Moretti, I had quietly learned how his empire worked.
I knew who financed his legitimate companies.
I knew which businessmen trusted him because they trusted me.
I knew which alliances depended upon my family name.
And I knew exactly which powerful man had guaranteed Ryan access to the most valuable legitimate shipping network his organization had ever controlled.
My father.
Vincent Hale.
Ryan had spent years convincing himself he had built everything alone.
He hadn’t.
The Moretti empire had been powerful before our marriage.
But my family had opened doors even Ryan Moretti couldn’t kick down.
And the largest deal of his life—the agreement about to expand his influence across three states—existed because one person had personally vouched for Ryan’s loyalty.
Me.
I reached into my purse.
Pulled out my phone.
And unlocked it.
Ryan’s expression changed.
The anger disappeared.
So did the embarrassment.
Fear replaced both.
“Claire.”
I opened my contacts.
Ryan stepped closer.
“Don’t.”
Interesting.
The most feared mafia boss in Chicago wasn’t ordering me anymore.
He was asking.
“Why?” I said softly. “Afraid my father might discover what kind of man he trusted?”
“Whatever you think you saw, we can fix this.”
I glanced at Chloe.
She was wearing the diamond bracelet I had seen hidden inside Ryan’s office two weeks earlier.
A bracelet he told me was a gift for a business associate’s wife.
“You already fixed it, Ryan.”
“What does that mean?”
“It means I finally understand.”
I found the contact.
VINCENT HALE.
My father.
The man whose signature sat beneath agreements protecting millions of dollars in Ryan’s legitimate businesses.
The man who had warned me before my wedding:
If Ryan Moretti ever forgets who stood beside him while he built his kingdom, call me.
I had laughed then.
I wasn’t laughing now.
Ryan reached for my wrist.
I stepped back.
“Don’t touch me.”
He froze.
Passengers were watching.
Even Chloe had gone completely silent.
Ryan lowered his voice.
“Claire, listen to me. You make that call and this becomes bigger than us.”
I stared at him.
“That’s the point.”
“You lied about where you were going.”
His face tightened.
“You brought your secretary on a secret trip.”
Silence.
“You let another woman sleep in your lap.”
More silence.
“And when someone called her your wife…”
My voice nearly broke.
“You smiled.”
For once, Ryan Moretti had no answer.
I pressed CALL.
The phone rang.
Once.
Twice.
Then my father answered.
“Claire?”
I looked directly into Ryan’s eyes.
“Dad, remember when you told me to call if Ryan ever forgot who his wife was?”
Ryan’s face went completely white.
There was a pause.
Then Vincent Hale’s voice became dangerously calm.
“Yes.”
I held Ryan’s stare.
“He forgot.”
Another pause.
“What did he do?”
I looked at Chloe.
“At the bracelet.
At my husband.
“He’s on my flight with Chloe Bennett.”
My father knew the name.
Everyone close to Ryan knew Chloe.
“He told me he was going to Portland. They’re together in first class. The flight attendant called Chloe his wife.”
Ryan closed his eyes.
“And Ryan corrected her?” Dad asked.
“No.”
“Claire.”
“No, Dad.”
My voice hardened.
“He smiled.”
Silence.
Then my father said, “Where are you landing?”
“Denver.”
“I’ll handle it.”
Ryan stepped forward.
“Vincent—”
Dad heard him.
“Is that Ryan?”
“Yes.”
“Put me on speaker.”
I did.
My father’s voice filled the space between us.
“Ryan.”
“Vincent, this is between Claire and me.”
“No. You made it my business when you built your expansion on Hale guarantees while humiliating my daughter.”
Ryan’s jaw tightened.
“Don’t make decisions while you’re angry.”
Dad laughed once.
“I’m not angry.”
That was worse.
“I’m disappointed.”
Ryan went still.
“Effective immediately, Hale Maritime suspends authorization on the Denver expansion agreement.”
Chloe gasped.
Ryan’s eyes flashed.
“Vincent.”
“The financing guarantee is withdrawn pending review.”
“You can’t do that.”
“I just did.”
Ryan looked at me.
For one second, I saw anger.
Then calculation.
Then something closer to panic.
Dad continued.
“And Ryan?”
“What?”
“If Claire tells me she wants out of your marriage, you will not use your organization, your money, your lawyers, or your reputation to frighten her into staying.”
“That’s none of your—”
“It became my business the moment you forgot that she chose you when half the respectable world wanted nothing to do with you.”
Ryan’s nostrils flared.
I ended the call.
The cabin seemed unnaturally quiet.
