Chloe stared at me.
Ryan stared at the floor.
Then his phone started vibrating.
Once.
Twice.
Again.
The consequences were already arriving.
I turned away.
“Claire.”
I stopped.
Ryan’s voice had changed.
No command.
No threat.
“Please let me explain.”
I looked over my shoulder.
“You had months.”
Then I returned to row fourteen.
When we landed in Denver, three black SUVs were waiting.
Two belonged to Ryan.
One belonged to my father.
Ryan’s men stood near baggage claim.
My father’s security team stood opposite them.
Nobody reached for anything.
Nobody needed to.
The tension said enough.
Ryan approached me.
“Come home with me.”
“No.”
“Claire.”
“I’m going with my father’s people.”
His jaw flexed.
“Do you really think I would hurt you?”
“No.”
That answer surprised him.
“I think you would talk until I doubted what I saw.”
His expression changed.
“You’ve done it before.”
“Claire—”
“You told me Chloe’s perfume on your jacket meant nothing.”
He looked away.
“You told me midnight meetings meant nothing.”
Silence.
“You told me I was insecure.”
I stepped closer.
“I’m done letting you explain my own eyes to me.”
I walked toward the Hale SUV.
Chloe suddenly called my name.
“Claire, wait.”
Ryan turned sharply.
“Chloe.”
She ignored him.
“There’s something you don’t understand.”
I stopped.
“Then tell me.”
Her eyes moved toward Ryan.
He looked furious.
“Chloe, don’t.”
That was interesting.
“What doesn’t she want me to know?” I asked.
Chloe hesitated.
Then said, “Denver wasn’t about us.”
Ryan swore under his breath.
I laughed bitterly.
“Were you practicing being his wife for business purposes?”
“No.”
“Then what?”
Chloe’s eyes filled with fear.
Ryan stepped between us.
“That’s enough.”
I looked at him.
“Why?”
“Because there are things you’re safer not knowing.”
The words hit harder than the betrayal.
For seven years, Ryan had used that sentence whenever he wanted to shut a door in my face.
Safer not knowing.
Safer staying home.
Safer not asking.
Safer trusting him.
I shook my head.
“No, Ryan.”
I opened the SUV door.
“I think ignorance has been dangerous enough.”
Then I climbed inside.
As we drove away, I looked through the rear window.
Ryan remained at the curb.
Chloe stood several feet behind him.
Neither looked like lovers anymore.
They looked like two people trapped inside a secret.
But I was too hurt to care.
At least, I thought I was.
Until my father’s head of security handed me a tablet.
“Mrs. Moretti, you need to see this.”
“What?”
“A message arrived for you ten minutes ago.”
I opened it.
There was a photograph of me boarding the plane in Chicago.
Taken from behind.
Beneath it were six words.
YOUR HUSBAND CAN’T PROTECT YOU FOREVER.
My blood turned cold.
Another image loaded.
Ryan and Chloe entering the airport.
Then a third.
A man I didn’t recognize.
Underneath was a final message.
ASK RYAN WHY CHLOE IS STILL ALIVE.
I looked through the rear window again.
Ryan was gone.
Suddenly, his secret trip to Denver looked very different.
Chap 2
Vincent Hale had built his fortune without ever needing to raise his voice.
At sixty-two, he still had the imposing posture of the former Marine he had once been, silver hair at his temples,
and the kind of quiet stare that made corporate attorneys revise sentences before finishing them.
He hugged me.
Not politely.
Not carefully.
He hugged me like I was still twelve years old.
That almost broke me.
“I’m fine,” I whispered.
“You don’t have to be.”
“I know.”
“Did he touch you?”
“No.”
“Threaten you?”
“No.”
“Good.”
Dad stepped back.
“Because betrayal is one thing. Fear is another.”
I showed him the photographs.
His expression changed immediately.
“Who sent these?”
“I don’t know.”
He called security.
Within minutes, phones were being examined and camera footage requested.
Then Dad looked at me.
“Does Ryan know?”
“Not unless the sender contacted him too.”
“You need to tell him.”
I laughed.
“You suspended his deal thirty minutes ago.”
“That was business.”
“And this?”
“This is your life.”
Dad handed my phone back.
“I can be furious with your husband and still recognize when he may know something about a threat.”
I hated that he was right.
I called Ryan.
He answered before the first ring finished.
“Claire.”
“I received a message.”
“What message?”
I read it.
Silence.
Then Ryan said one word.
“Where?”
“At Dad’s house.”
“Stay there.”
The Mafia Boss voice returned.
This time I didn’t argue because I heard something underneath it.
Fear.
“Ryan, who is Chloe?”
Silence.
“Your secretary isn’t just your secretary, is she?”
“I’m coming.”
“No.”
“Claire.”
“You’re going to answer me first.”
He exhaled.
“Chloe Bennett’s real name is Chloe Vescari.”
The name meant nothing to me.
“Should it?”
“It would to my enemies.”
“Explain.”
