His hands visible.
No weapon.
Luca’s smile faded slightly.
“Times really have changed.”
Ryan looked at Sophia.
“You okay?”
“Yes.”
Ethan?
“Yes.”
Only then did Ryan look at Luca.
“What do you want?”
“The agreement.”
Sophia held up the folder.
Luca smiled.
Ryan didn’t.
“That document has no legal value.”
“Legal?”
Luca laughed.
“Our fathers didn’t build their world through courts.”
“No.”
Ryan looked at him.
“That’s why their world died.”
Luca’s face hardened.
“Your world didn’t die.”
“Yes, it did.”
“You still have the money.”
“I built legitimate companies.”
“With blood money.”
Ryan absorbed the accusation.
Then nodded.
“Some of it.”
Everyone looked at him.
Luca had expected denial.
Ryan gave him truth.
“I spent thirty years trying to turn what I inherited into something that didn’t require fear.”
“Convenient.”
“Yes.”
Ryan’s voice remained calm.
“Very.”
Luca stepped closer.
“My father died believing you betrayed him.”
“Anthony wanted our children bound to an agreement they never made.”
“He wanted stability.”
“He wanted control.”
Luca smiled.
“Isn’t that rich coming from you?”
Ryan didn’t answer immediately.
Then:
“Yes.”
Luca’s smile disappeared.
Ryan continued.
“I was controlling.”
Past tense.
Not denial.
“I lied to my wife.”
My chest tightened.
“I made choices for people because I thought power gave me better judgment.”
He looked at Sophia.
“I was wrong.”
Sophia’s eyes filled.
Luca snapped:
“This isn’t therapy.”
“No.”
Ryan looked back at him.
“This is me telling you the agreement ends here.”
“You can’t end what your father started.”
“My father is dead.”
“Then honor him.”
“No.”
One word.
Luca’s face twisted.
“Your daughter marries Cole.”
Sophia stood.
“No.”
Luca ignored her.
Ryan didn’t.
He looked at Sophia.
“What do you want?”
She glanced at Ethan.
Pain crossed both faces.
“I don’t know.”
Ryan nodded.
“Then that’s the answer.”
Luca stared.
Ryan continued.
“No merger.”
“No marriage requirement.”
“No inherited alliance.”
“No inherited war.”
Luca laughed.
“You think you can walk away?”
Ryan looked at me.
Then back at him.
“Yes.”
Luca reached into his coat.
Everything happened fast.
Ryan moved toward Sophia.
Ethan stood.
I froze.
But Luca didn’t pull a gun.
He pulled a phone.
On the screen was a video.
Vincent Hale.
My father.
Recorded years earlier.
Luca pressed play.
Dad’s face appeared.
Older.
Tired.
“If you’re watching this, Anthony’s son has probably done something stupid.”
I almost laughed.
Even dead, Dad had timing.
Luca’s face changed.
He hadn’t expected that line.
Dad continued.
“The agreement signed by Moretti, Cole, Bellandi, Russo, and Vescari was never intended to bind our children.”
Thomas Cole entered the video.
Younger.
Then Marco.
Then Ryan.
It was a recorded dissolution.
Every surviving signer had agreed years ago to terminate the compact.
Including Anthony Bellandi.
Luca stared.
“No.”
Ryan looked at him.
“Your father ended it.”
“No.”
“He knew the world had changed.”
“You’re lying.”
Sophia placed the original agreement on the table.
Then another document.
The dissolution.
Signed.
Notarized.
Legal.
Final.
Luca looked at his father’s signature.
His entire identity collapsed quietly.
He had built revenge around a promise his own father had abandoned.
“Where did you get this?”
Sophia answered.
“Grandpa Vincent’s files.”
I looked at her.
She smiled faintly.
Apparently my father had hidden documents from everyone equally.
Family tradition.
Luca’s men shifted.
Sirens sounded outside.
Luca looked at Ryan.
“You called police?”
“Yes.”
“You.”
“Yes.”
“You’re Ryan Moretti.”
“I know.”
“You used to handle your own problems.”
Ryan glanced at me.
Then Sophia.
Then Ethan.
“I still am.”
The warehouse doors opened.
Federal agents entered.
No gunfight.
No dramatic execution.
No mafia war.
Luca was arrested.
His associates surrendered.
It was almost disappointingly civilized.
I loved every second.
Outside, Sophia stood beside Ethan.
Her engagement ring remained in her pocket.
He didn’t ask for it.
Good.
He said:
“I’m sorry.”
She nodded.
“I know.”
“I love you.”
“I know.”
“I want to fix this.”
Sophia looked at him.
“Then fix yourself.”
Ethan swallowed.
“And us?”
“If there’s an us afterward, we’ll find out.”
Ryan looked at me.
The words sounded familiar.
One day at a time.
One truthful conversation.
One unlocked door.
Ethan nodded.
Then left with his father.
Sophia came to us.
Ryan opened his arms.
Stopped.
Asked:
“Can I?”
My daughter burst into tears.
Then hugged him.
Ryan held her.
Not possessively.
Not desperately.
Carefully.
Like love was something entrusted, not owned.
I looked away because some moments belong partly to the people inside them.
Then Sophia hugged me.
“You came.”
“Obviously.”
“I told you not to.”
“I’m your mother. Hypocrisy is included.”
She laughed through tears.
Then looked between us.
“Are you two okay?”
Ryan said nothing.
My choice.
Always.
I looked at him.
“We’re truthful.”
Sophia frowned.
“That wasn’t my question.”
“It is my answer.”
On the drive home, Ryan sat beside me.
Not touching.
