Twilight set in, and the streetlights of San Francisco began to flicker to life. After clocking out, I didn’t call an Uber straight back to the Atherton estate. Instead, I took a cab directly to an exclusive, ultra-private bourbon-and-tea lounge hidden away on a tree-lined street in Nob Hill.
Inside, the air was thick with the scent of cedarwood and Earl Grey. Arthur Hughes was already waiting for me at a mahogany table in the deepest corner of the room. Arthur wasn’t just a veteran corporate litigator. He was my father’s closest confidant, a man who had gone to war with my dad in the trenches during the early startup days. He was currently the independent senior corporate counsel for Sterling Innovations, serving as the ultimate guardian of the company’s legal integrity.
I walked into the private alcove, nodded respectfully to the older man, and carefully placed the encrypted USB drive on the table. In a low, steady voice, I summarized the sickening events that had taken place in the cafeteria that afternoon and instructed Arthur to plug the drive into his secure laptop to review the financial evidence and the security footage himself.
The calm, worldly eyes of the veteran lawyer slowly shifted into a state of absolute volcanic rage as he scrolled through the sophisticated wire transfers. When he heard Preston’s ruthless conspiracy on the video, he snapped. Arthur slammed his gnarled fist down onto the mahogany table, cursing Preston as an ungrateful, treasonous sociopath, a parasite biting the hand that fed him.
I calmly poured a cup of hot tea, handing it to him with both hands. Maintaining my icy composure, I laid out my battle plan. It was crystal clear, with absolutely zero room for negotiation.
Target one: Preston will be terminated from Sterling Innovations with absolutely nothing and ordered to pay full restitution.
Target two: I will officially invoke my status as majority shareholder, immediately reclaiming total executive control of the corporation right before the Apex Ventures funding round.
Target three: we finalize the criminal referral to the FBI and the SEC, ensuring Khloe and her accomplices in the shell LLCs are hauled into federal court to face serious prison time.
Arthur nodded in absolute, unconditional agreement. His eyes gleamed with deep admiration for the terrifying resolve of the little girl he had watched grow up. He promised to pull an all-nighter at his firm, personally drafting a unilateral divorce petition with the most draconian terms legally possible. Simultaneously, he would finalize an emergency sealed injunction to present to the board of directors, demanding an immediate freeze on all of Preston’s assets.
We agreed that the guillotine would drop at the emergency board-of-directors meeting summoned for the very next morning.
I thanked Arthur and walked out of the lounge with the aura of an elite general stepping onto the most brutal battlefield of her life.
The clock struck exactly 10:00 p.m. when my Uber pulled up to the massive wrought-iron gates of the Atherton mansion. This house was once the warm sanctuary of my dreams. But tonight, pushing the heavy oak doors open, I felt only a bone-chilling cold, as if I were stepping into a mausoleum that housed the corpse of my wasted youth.
I walked past the grand foyer and straight into the sprawling living room. Preston was sitting arrogantly on the custom sofa. The crystal ashtray on the glass coffee table was overflowing with crushed cigar butts.
Seeing me enter, he immediately stubbed out his cigar and shot to his feet, instantly pasting on his familiar, sickeningly sweet mask of concern. He hurried over to me, holding out a tube of highly expensive, prescription-grade bruise ointment, dropping his voice to a soothing, apologetic register. He began to spin his web.
He swore that the incident in the cafeteria was just a massive, unfortunate misunderstanding. He immediately threw his mistress under the bus. He claimed Khloe was immature, impulsive, and cracking under the stress of the job, causing her to act out violently. He swore on his life that tomorrow morning he would drag her into his office, scream at her, and force her to get on her knees and beg my forgiveness to restore my honor. He played the role of the helpless, deeply wounded husband, devastated that his beloved wife had been attacked by a rogue employee.
I crossed my arms over my chest, flat-out refusing to touch the tube of ointment coated in his filth. I stood perfectly still, my eyes freezing cold, letting him finish his pathetic, clownish performance.
When he finally stopped talking, I spoke. My voice was like cracking a whip.
