The officer told her she was being cited and possibly arrested depending on medical findings and the report.

Patricia turned to Thomas.

“Do something.”

He stared at her.

“I am.”

For the first time since I had known her, Patricia looked unsure.

Not scared enough.

But unsure.

Paramedics arrived next.

One treated my hand with cool gel and bandages while the other checked my cheek.

“Emergency clinic,” the first said. “Soon.”

“I’ll take her,” Thomas said.

Ryan stepped forward.

“I’ll take my wife.”

I looked at him.

“I am not your wife tonight.”

The words slipped out before I could stop them.

But once said, they felt true.

Ryan’s face crumpled for half a second.

Then anger covered it.

“This is because of Dad. He poisoned you against me.”

I held up my bandaged hand.

“No. This is because you watched me burn and called it a lesson.”

Officer Lane asked Ryan to step outside.

He refused at first.

Then Thomas moved toward him.

“Go.”

Ryan stared at his father.

Something passed between them.

Years of weakness.

Years of control.

Years of Patricia speaking for everyone until nobody knew their own voice.

Ryan went outside.

At the clinic, Thomas sat beside me in the waiting room.

Neither of us spoke for a long time.

My hand was wrapped.

My cheek had swollen.

My ring finger felt naked.

Finally, I asked, “Why didn’t you tell me about his first wife?”

Thomas looked down.

His eyes filled with shame.

“Because I was a coward.”

The answer was so honest I had no reply.

He continued.

“Her name was Allison. She left after eleven months. Patricia convinced everyone Allison was unstable, greedy, disrespectful. Ryan believed what was easiest. I knew more than I admitted.”

“Did Patricia hit her?”

His face tightened.

“No. She destroyed her differently.”

I looked at him.

“What happened to her?”

Thomas swallowed.

“She tried to warn me about the money. About Ryan hiding debts. About Patricia controlling him. I paid her to leave quietly because I thought I was protecting the family name.”

My heart went cold.

“You paid her off?”

“Yes.”

The room seemed to pull away from me.

Thomas closed his eyes.

“I have regretted it every day.”

I stood carefully.

Pain shot through my hand, but I ignored it.

“Take me home.”

“Emily—”

“Take me home.”

His face fell.

He knew something had changed.

He had helped me tonight.

May you like

But he had also been part of the silence that let it happen.

And I was done mistaking delayed honesty for innocence.
