“I never installed this.”
Ryan had.
Of course Ryan had.
The keypad needed a code.
I tried our anniversary.
Wrong.
Ryan’s birthday.
Wrong.
Patricia’s birthday.
The safe clicked.
I almost threw up.
Inside were folders.
Cash.
A flash drive.
Passports.
And a small velvet box.
Not jewelry.
I opened it.
Inside were two rings.
One was mine.
Not the ring on the dining table.
A different ring.
A diamond ring I had never seen before.
The other was engraved.
A.M.
Allison Mercer.
My hand shook.
Thomas whispered, “Dear God.”
I opened the nearest folder.
At the top was a life insurance policy.
On me.
My name.
My signature.
Except I had never signed it.
Beneficiary: Ryan Mercer.
Amount: $500,000.
The room spun.
Mrs. Alvarez caught my arm.
Thomas reached for the wall.
Another folder held medical power of attorney paperwork.
Again, my forged signature.
Another held photocopies of my passport, birth certificate, and bank cards.
Then I found a printed email from Patricia.
Make sure everything is in place before she starts asking questions. Emily is more stubborn than Allison. If she leaves with documents, we lose the house and the money.
I looked at Thomas.
His face had turned gray.
This was no longer just abuse.
No longer just theft.
This was something darker.
My phone rang again.
Ryan.
This time, I answered.
I put it on speaker.
His voice came sharp.
“Emily, listen to me very carefully. Do not open the safe.”
I stared at the forged insurance policy in my hand.
“Too late.”
Silence.
Then his breathing changed.
“Emily.”
My voice was calm.
Too calm.
“I found Allison’s ring.”
He said nothing.
Thomas grabbed the edge of the desk.
I kept going.
“And the insurance policy.”
Ryan whispered, “You don’t understand.”
May you like
“No,” I said. “But the police will.”
Then I hung up.
Chapter 5
Ryan came back in less than ten minutes.
Not alone.
Patricia was with him.
So was Brooke.
And behind them, to my surprise, stood a woman I had never seen before.
She was tall, thin, and pale, with dark hair pulled into a knot and a wool coat buttoned to her throat.
Thomas opened the front door before they could use their keys.
Nobody stepped inside.
Not at first.
Ryan looked past his father toward me.
His eyes were wild.
“Emily, give me the documents.”
I stood in the hallway with Mrs. Alvarez beside me and my phone already recording in my pocket.
“My documents?”
“You don’t know what you’re doing.”
Patricia pushed forward.
“This is theft.”
Thomas blocked the doorway.
“You want to talk about theft?”
Patricia’s eyes flashed.
“This is my home.”
“No,” I said.
Everyone looked at me.
I stepped closer, careful with my bandaged hand.
“It is mine.”
Patricia’s mouth tightened.
“You little—”
The woman behind Brooke spoke.
“Still using that tone, Patricia?”
Patricia froze.
The woman stepped into the porch light.
Ryan’s face went white.
“Allison,” he whispered.
My heart slammed.
Allison.
The first wife.
The woman who had been erased before me.
She looked at Ryan for one second.
Not with love.
Not even hatred.
With exhaustion.
“Hello, Ryan.”
Patricia recovered first.
“What are you doing here?”
Allison held up her phone.
“Thomas called.”
I looked at Thomas.
His face was full of shame and fear.
“I called her after you found the safe.”
Ryan’s voice cracked.
“You had no right.”
Allison laughed softly.
“No right? That’s rich.”
Brooke stood behind Patricia, eyes wide, like her whole childhood was being rewritten in front of her.
Allison looked at me.
Her gaze dropped to my swollen cheek.
Then my bandaged hand.
Pain crossed her face.
“I’m sorry.”
Two words.
From a stranger.
They meant more than every excuse Ryan had ever made.
“Did they do this to you too?” I asked.
Allison’s jaw tightened.
“Not exactly.”
Patricia sneered.
“She is unstable. Always was.”
Allison looked at the woman who had destroyed her.
“I used to shake when you said that. Now it just sounds old.”
Patricia’s face flushed.
Ryan stepped forward.
“Allison, this has nothing to do with you.”
“It has everything to do with me if my ring was in your safe.”
His mouth closed.
Thomas turned to him slowly.
“Why did you have it?”
Ryan said nothing.
Allison’s voice stayed steady.
“That ring disappeared the night I left. Patricia told me I must have lost it in my emotional state.”
Brooke whispered, “Mom.”
Patricia snapped, “Stay out of it.”
Brooke flinched.
Allison saw.
So did I.
The whole family ran on flinches.
Patricia raised her chin.
“This is ridiculous. Emily has manipulated Thomas. Allison has always wanted revenge. Ryan, get inside and take what belongs to you.”
Thomas’s voice thundered.
“He will not step one foot into Emily’s house.”
For the first time all night, Thomas sounded like the owner of his own spine.
Ryan stared at him.
“You’re choosing her over your son?”
Thomas’s face crumpled, but he did not move.
“I am choosing the truth.”
Sirens sounded down the street.
Ryan’s eyes darted toward the road.
I had called Officer Lane the moment Ryan said not to open the safe.
Patricia heard the sirens too.
Her whole body changed.
She grabbed Ryan’s sleeve.
“We should leave.”
Ryan did not move.
Allison stepped toward me.
“Did you find insurance papers?”
I nodded.
Her face went still.
“On you?”
“Yes.”
She closed her eyes.
“What?” Thomas asked.
Allison opened them slowly.
“He had one on me too.”
Ryan shouted, “That was standard financial planning.”
Allison turned on him.
“You forged my signature.”
Ryan stepped back.
“I didn’t.”
Patricia said, “You signed many things you don’t remember.”
Allison’s eyes burned.
“I remember everything.”
The police cars pulled up behind them.
Officer Lane got out first.
He looked at our porch and seemed unsurprised to see it full again.
“Mrs. Mercer?”
I almost corrected him.
Then I realized the name still legally belonged to me.
For now.
“I have documents I need to report,” I said.
Ryan tried to speak.
Officer Lane held up a hand.
“Sir, not yet.”
Inside the house, we laid everything on the dining room table.
The same table where they had laughed at me.
The house deed.
The forged insurance policy.
The medical power of attorney.
My financial documents.
Allison’s written statement.
Photos of the safe.
Allison’s ring.
Officer Lane photographed everything.
A detective arrived an hour later.
Detective Mara Hill.
She was calm, sharp-eyed, and impossible to intimidate.
Patricia tried.
It did not work.
Detective Hill asked me questions first.
Then Thomas.
Then Allison.
Then Ryan.
Ryan kept saying he wanted an attorney.
