That was the smartest thing he had said all night.
Patricia called me vindictive.
Detective Hill wrote it down.
Patricia called Allison unstable.
Detective Hill wrote that down too.
Brooke finally broke.
“I knew about the moving truck.”
Everyone turned.
Tears streamed down her face.
“Mom said Emily needed to learn she could be replaced. She said Ryan would handle the safe and Dad would calm down after Christmas. I thought it was just belongings. I didn’t know about insurance.”
Patricia hissed, “Brooke, shut your mouth.”
Brooke sobbed.
“No. I’m done. You told us Allison stole from Ryan. You told us Emily was after money. You told us Dad was weak. But you are the one who keeps hurting people.”
The words hit harder than shouting.
Patricia looked genuinely stunned.
As if betrayal from the daughter she had trained was the one wound she had never prepared for.
Detective Hill asked Brooke to sit down and give a statement.
Brooke did.
By dawn, the police took the forged documents as evidence.
Ryan was not arrested that morning.
Neither was Patricia.
But Detective Hill made one thing clear.
“This investigation is open. Nobody contacts Mrs. Mercer except through counsel. Nobody enters this property without her written permission. If anyone comes back uninvited, call us.”
She looked at Ryan when she said it.
Ryan looked at me.
For a moment, I saw the man I married.
Scared.
Small.
Lost behind his mother.
Then Patricia put a hand on his shoulder, and he hardened again.
They left together.
That answered my last question.
After everyone was gone, Allison stood near the dining room window.
The morning light made her look almost transparent.
“I wish someone had stood with me,” she said quietly.
I looked at her.
“I’m sorry they didn’t.”
She nodded.
Then she turned to Thomas.
“You were too late for me.”
Thomas’s face crumpled.
“I know.”
She looked back at me.
“But maybe not for her.”
For the first time since the slap, I cried.
May you like
Not because I was weak.
Because another woman had reached back through her own pain and helped pull me out.
