I looked at Mia.

She smiled.

That smile hurt more than the destroyed dress.

Because it told me she knew she was protected.

For years, Linda had chosen Mia.

But I never expected her to choose her after this.

I picked up the torn dress with shaking hands.

“I can’t believe you’re defending her.””

Linda rolled her eyes.

“Your father is going to be disappointed that you’re causing drama on such an important morning.””

“My father is going to see what she did.””

The confidence in my voice surprised even me.

Mia laughed.

“Dad won’t care.””

I looked at her.

“What did you say?””

She leaned against the wall.

“Dad always forgives me.””

That sentence stayed in the air.

Because she believed it.

She believed there would be no consequences.

She believed she could destroy anything she wanted.

Then the sound of a car door closing came from outside.

Linda froze.

“Mia…”

“What?””

“That’s your father’s car.””

My heart stopped.

The front door opened.

Heavy footsteps moved through the hallway.

Then my father appeared.

He was supposed to arrive later.

He was supposed to bring flowers.

He was supposed to take pictures.

Instead, he walked into a room filled with pieces of the one thing I had worked so hard for.

His eyes moved from the shredded dress…

to the scissors…

to Mia.

The warmth disappeared from his face.

His expression became something I had never seen before.

Cold.

Silent.

Dangerous.

“Dad…” Mia started.

He raised one hand.

She stopped talking.

My father slowly walked toward the ruined dress.

He picked up one torn piece of fabric.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then he asked quietly:

“Who did this?””

Mia swallowed.

“It was just a joke.””

My father looked at her.

“A joke?””

She forced a smile.

“I didn’t think she’d get so upset.””

My father placed the fabric down.

Then he turned toward Linda.

“And you?””

Linda immediately became defensive.

“Don’t look at me like that. It’s just a dress.””

The room went completely silent.

My father stared at her.

Then he said something that made Mia’s face change.

“You’re right.””

Linda relaxed.

Until he finished the sentence.

“It’s just a dress.””

He looked at Mia.

“But what you did was not.””

Mia’s confidence disappeared.

For the first time, she looked afraid.

My father walked out of my room.

Nobody moved.

Nobody understood.

Then we heard him walking upstairs.

Toward Mia’s bedroom.

A few seconds later, Mia’s voice screamed through the house.

“Dad, what are you doing?!””

I looked at Linda.

Her face had gone pale.

Then my father shouted one sentence that made my entire body freeze.

“Mia, today you’re going to learn that destroying someone’s dream has a price.””
