Because for years, I thought Mia hated me because she was cruel.
I never considered that she hated me because she was hurting.
But hurting people still hurt others.
My father walked toward her.
“I’m sorry you felt invisible.””
Mia looked hopeful.
Then he continued.
“But I will not apologize for being proud of Emma.””
Her expression collapsed.
“She earned every bit of it.””
That night, I received an email.
From Carter Innovations.
My hands shook as I opened it.
I expected them to cancel my internship.
Instead, it said:
“Emma Wilson, after reviewing the situation, we would like to speak with you personally.””
There was one more line.
A meeting request.
With Ethan Carter.
And underneath it:
“Please bring any evidence regarding the unauthorized use of your identity.””
I looked at my father.
He read the message.
Then he said something that made my heart stop.
“Emma…”
“What?””
“Ethan Carter was not just standing beside Mia in that picture.””
I looked at him.
“What do you mean?””
My father pointed to the photo.
“He was holding something.””
I zoomed in.
And there it was.
A small folder in Ethan’s hand.
A folder with my name written across it.
But the name underneath had been crossed out.
May you like
And replaced with one word.
“Mia.””
