I stared at the message until the words blurred.
My first thought was that it had to be a mistake.
Nobody else knew.
Or at least, nobody should have known.
I slowly typed:
“Who is this?””
The reply came almost immediately.
“I was there.””
My fingers tightened around my phone.
“Where?””
Three dots appeared.
Then disappeared.
Then appeared again.
Finally:
“Your house. Yesterday.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
Yesterday?
What happened yesterday?
I looked up.
My father was still speaking with Mia downstairs.
I walked away quietly and stepped into the backyard.
The morning air was cold against my face.
I called the number.
After three rings, someone answered.
“Hello?””
The voice was female.
Young.
“Who is this?””
A pause.
“My name is Chloe.””
I didn’t recognize the name.
“Why did you message me?””
Another pause.
“Because Mia didn’t destroy your dress because she thought it was ugly.””
My stomach tightened.
“Then why?””
“She was trying to stop you from wearing it.””
I looked back toward the house.
“What does that mean?””
Chloe lowered her voice.
“Mia found something.””
“What?””
“She found the acceptance letter.””
My eyebrows pulled together.
“What acceptance letter?””
“The one from the internship.””
My heart stopped.
I knew exactly what she meant.
Three weeks earlier, I had received an email from a prestigious company in another state.
A paid internship.
A chance to start my career.
A chance I had dreamed about.
I hadn’t told many people.
Only my father.
Or so I thought.
“She knew?”” I whispered.
“Yes.””
“How?””
Chloe hesitated.
“Because she saw your laptop.””
My chest tightened.
“She went through my laptop?””
“Yes.””
I closed my eyes.
That was worse.
Much worse.
Because now I understood.
The dress wasn’t the target.
I was.
“What does the internship have to do with the dress?””
Chloe sighed.
“She heard you talking to your dad.””
I remembered.
Two nights before.
My father and I had been sitting in the kitchen.
He had smiled when I told him.
“You’re leaving for a new city,” he said.
“I’m proud of you.””
Mia must have heard.
“She was angry because she thought you were finally getting something she wanted.””
“But why destroy the dress?””
Chloe answered quietly.
“Because she knew graduation photos would be posted online.””
I felt sick.
“She wanted to embarrass me.””
“Yes.””
The backyard suddenly felt too quiet.
“Who are you, Chloe?””
“I’m Mia’s friend.””
That surprised me.
“You’re her friend?””
“Not anymore.””
“Why are you helping me?””
Chloe didn’t answer immediately.
Then she said:
“Because I watched her laugh while she cut that dress.””
My eyes burned.
“And I realized I didn’t know who she was anymore.””
I thanked Chloe and ended the call.
When I walked back inside, my father was sitting at the kitchen table.
He looked exhausted.
“You okay?””
I hesitated.
Then I handed him my phone.
He read the messages.
His expression changed.
Not anger.
Something deeper.
Disappointment.
“Mia did this because of your internship?””
I nodded.
“She wanted to stop me from leaving.””
My father stood.
“Where is she?””
I grabbed his arm.
“Dad.””
He looked at me.
“What?””
“Don’t make this worse.””
His face softened.
“I spent years thinking protecting my family meant avoiding conflict.””
He looked toward the stairs.
“I was wrong.””
That evening, Mia finally admitted it.
Not everything.
But enough.
She sat across from us at the table.
“I just felt like everyone was choosing her.””
My father stared.
“She earned those opportunities.””
Mia looked at me.
“You always made me feel behind.””
I almost couldn’t believe what I was hearing.
“You destroyed my dress because you felt behind?””
She looked down.
“I wanted one day where people looked at me.””
My father shook his head.
“You had every chance to create your own moment.””
Mia wiped her eyes.
“But she always had something.””
My father leaned forward.
“No, Mia.””
His voice was steady.
“She had something because she worked for it.””
The silence afterward was heavy.
For the first time, Mia looked smaller.
Not powerful.
Not untouchable.
Just a girl who had made a terrible choice.
But then Linda walked into the room holding a folder.
She looked nervous.
“I need to tell you something.””
My father turned.
“What?””
Linda placed the folder on the table.
“I didn’t want you to find out this way.””
My heart started racing.
“What is that?””
Linda looked at me.
Then at my father.
“It’s about Mia’s real reason for destroying the dress.””
My father opened the folder.
His face changed after reading the first page.
“What is this?””
Linda whispered:
“The reason Mia was desperate to stop the graduation photos…”
May you like
She swallowed.
