The silence inside the car was deafening, broken only by the rhythmic drumming of rain on the roof and the sound of Leo’s soft, frightened sniffling.

“Shh, you’re safe now, my sweet boy,” Victoria whispered, kissing the top of Leo’s damp curls. “Mommy has you. Nothing will ever hurt you again.”

Leo looked up at her through the shadows, his small hands holding tightly onto the sleeve of her silk dress.

“Where are we going?” the boy asked softly.

“Somewhere far away from here,” Victoria promised him. “Where you can paint all day and play in the sun.”

Julian stepped out into the rain, scanning the dark tree line with night-vision goggles.

“They lost us for now,” Julian said, opening the rear door and motioning them out. “We take the boat hidden in the cove.

It’ll take us across the sound to Connecticut.”

Sophia stepped out of the driver’s seat, pulling her wet hair back from her face.

“Julian, let me check the shoreline first,” Sophia offered, reaching into her pocket. “I have the keys to the boathouse.”

As Sophia reached into her trench coat, a small, silver burner phone slipped from her pocket, bouncing against the gravel near Victoria’s heels.

The screen illuminated with an incoming text message.

Victoria glanced down instinctively.

The sender ID was simply a single letter: *M*.

And the text message read: *Keep them near the lighthouse. The helicopter will intercept the boat.*

Victoria froze, her blood turning to ice colder than the Atlantic spray.

“Sophia?” Victoria whispered, stepping back, pulling Leo behind her.

Sophia stopped in her tracks, her hand hovering near her waist.

“Victoria… don’t look at it like that,” Sophia said, her voice shaking with an unnatural mix of guilt and desperation.

“You?” Julian growled, his weapon clearing its holster in a microsecond, leveling straight at Sophia’s forehead. “You leaked the coordinates at the farmhouse? You gave Marcus the alarm override codes?”

“I had no choice, Julian!” Sophia sobbed, raising her hands while stepping backward into the rain. “Marcus has my younger brother! He’s had him in a private detention facility in Mexico for six months!”

“You betrayed us,” Victoria said, the sting of the betrayal cutting deeper than any bullet could have. “You stood by my side while I cried for five years. You helped me build the gallery!”

“I did that to protect you!” Sophia cried out, tears streaming down her pale face.

“Marcus promised me that if I helped him secure the boy tonight, he would release my brother and leave you alone! He swore he only wanted the trust assets!”

“Marcus doesn’t leave loose ends, Sophia,” Julian said coldly, his finger tightening on the trigger. “He was going to sink that boat with all of us on it—including you.”

Chap 19

The downdraft from the approaching helicopter whipped the sea spray into a blinding frenzy.

“Get inside the station! Move!” Julian roared, grabbing Sophia by the collar and shoving her through the rusted doorway before pushing Victoria and Leo into the shelter.

A hail of high-caliber rounds tore through the roof of the coast guard station, raining rusted metal and broken glass around them.

“Sophia, if you want your brother to live,

you tell me right now where Marcus’s offshore communications hub is located!” Victoria demanded, gripping Sophia’s jacket, her eyes burning with maternal fury.

Sophia fell to her knees, crying uncontrollably. “He’s not on the helicopter! Marcus never left the mansion! He used the decoy to draw you out so he could destroy the original vault documents before the federal agents arrived!”

“He’s destroying the genetic proof,” Julian realized, his jaw clenching. “If the physical chain of custody is burned tonight, the court will recognize his international custody filings by default.”

“We’re not running to Connecticut,” Victoria said, looking at Julian with absolute certainty. “We’re going back.”

“Victoria, that estate is a fortress crawling with armed mercenaries,” Julian warned.

“And my whole life is in that vault,” Victoria countered fiercely. “My legal rights to my son, my family’s legacy, and the evidence that puts Marcus in a cage forever. We finish this tonight.”

Julian looked at her, seeing no trace of the fragile, broken woman who had hidden from the world after her sham marriage collapsed.

She was a mother fighting for her cub.

“Sophia,” Julian said coldly. “Give me your burner phone. You will send Marcus a message confirming that we died on the boat.”

Fifteen minutes later, leaving Sophia locked securely inside the reinforced coast guard bunker, Julian and Victoria approached the perimeter of the Sterling estate.

They had left Leo hidden with Julian’s most trusted personal bodyguard in an underground bunker beneath the Greenwich safehouse.

The boy was safe. Now, it was time for justice.
