Julian slowly lowered his rifle and showed his credentials, while Victoria stepped back, holding the undamaged dossier against her heart.
The agents swarmed Marcus, lifting him off the floor and reading him his constitutional rights as they dragged him toward the hallway.
Julian walked over to Victoria, gently wrapping his arm around her trembling shoulders.
“It’s over,” Julian whispered softly into her hair. “The documents are safe. Leo is safe. You won, Victoria.”
Victoria let out a ragged breath, the tears finally flowing freely down her cheeks as she rested her head against Julian’s chest.
For the first time in five years, the nightmare truly seemed to have ended.
Suddenly, a loud crackle sounded over the lead FBI agent’s radio.
The agent stopped in the doorway, pressing his earpiece tightly against his ear, his expression turning pale.
“Say that again, command?” the agent spoke into his shoulder microphone.
The voice crackling from the radio was panicked and broken by static.
“All units, be advised! The Greenwich safehouse has been compromised!”
Victoria’s head snapped up, her heart stopping dead in her chest.
“What did you say?” Julian shouted, stepping toward the agent.
