The woman claiming to carry his child was hiding something far darker than a simple affair. Still pinning the intruder, Daniel reached out with a trembling hand.
He grabbed the tangled blonde wig and yanked it backward. The hairpiece came off effortlessly, pulling away a layer of latex makeup.
Underneath the disguise lay a face deeply scarred by severe burn marks. A sharp, masculine jawline and cold, piercing gray eyes stared back.
Daniel released the man as if he had touched a burning coal. He stumbled backward, his spine slamming hard against a catering table.
All the color drained completely from his handsome face. “No,” Daniel whispered, his voice trembling so violently he sounded like a frightened child.
“No, you… you died. I saw the car burn. You died, Julian.
” Victoria shivered on the floor, wiping a glob of sticky frosting from her eyelashes.

Julian slowly pushed himself up from the marble floor. He didn’t look like a defeated criminal; he looked like a predator cornering his final prey.
He kicked the discarded pink maternity dress aside. Standing tall in the tactical black clothing he wore underneath, he scanned the silent room.
“Surprised, Danny?” Julian rasped, his vocal cords permanently damaged from the toxic smoke he had inhaled half a decade ago. “I told you hell couldn’t hold me.”
“You’re dead,” Daniel repeated, hyperventilating as he stared at the floor. His eyes darted frantically toward the doors. “Security! Get him out of here!”
Daniel pointed a shaking finger at his former friend. “He’s a lunatic! Arrest him!” But none of the private security guards made a single move.
In fact, Sophia—the quiet, dutiful housemaid—walked steadily across the ballroom floor. She reached up and pulled the bobby pins from her neat bun.
Her dark hair fell freely over her shoulders. She walked straight past the frozen guests and took her place standing directly beside Julian.
“I told you we’d get him, Dad,” Sophia said quietly. She reached into her apron pocket and handed Julian a clean white handkerchief.
The room erupted into a deafening wave of shocked gasps. Victoria felt the marble floor tilting violently beneath her trembling hands. *Dad?*
Julian wiped the remaining theatrical adhesive from his scarred cheek. He turned to address the captive audience of senators, investors, and socialites.
He looked directly down at Victoria, his hardened eyes softening with a fraction of genuine,
burning pity. “I apologize for the cake, Victoria,” Julian said.
His gravelly voice echoed through the cavernous space. “And for the slap. It was the only way to ensure every single camera in this room was recording.”
Julian gestured to the smartphones raised by the stunned guests. “We needed a massive spectacle to trap a rat in broad daylight.”
He pointed a scarred finger down at the papers littering the floor. “Five years ago, my brilliant partner Daniel discovered a flaw in our company’s code.”
“A backdoor he created to funnel client funds into his own secret offshore accounts,” Julian explained, pacing slowly across the ruined floor.
“When I found out and threatened to go to the authorities, he didn’t just fire me. He drugged my scotch and dragged me into my own sports car.
”
Chap 4
Julian ignored the desperate plea completely. He bent down, picked up one of the scattered photographs, and held it up for the front row.
It was a security still showing Daniel walking away from a burning vehicle on a dark coastal highway. The silence in the room was absolute.
“I survived, obviously,” Julian continued, his voice dropping into a dangerous register. “Barely. I spent two years in a burn ward in Mexico under a false name.”
“And the last three years?” Julian asked, his gaze sweeping over the horrified crowd. “I spent those meticulously tracking every single dime Daniel stole.”
“But I couldn’t just take it to the police,” Julian admitted. “Daniel had bought the local police force. He bought judges. He bought protection.”
“He even married into one of the most powerful political families in the state to ensure he was completely untouchable by the law.”
Julian turned his piercing gray eyes back to Victoria. “He didn’t marry you for love, Victoria. He married you for your father’s judicial connections.”
“You were his ultimate insurance policy against the world.” Julian took a deep breath. “And my daughter, Sophia? She gave up her normal life.”
“She took a job scrubbing your floors just to plant listening devices in his home office,” Julian revealed. “We needed physical proof from his private safe.”
Victoria felt a cold, hollow void open up inside her chest. She looked slowly across the room at Daniel. The man she had slept beside for three years.
