“Your mother has finally decided to fight.””
I looked toward the road.
“Then we’re going to make sure she doesn’t have to fight alone.””
My phone buzzed again.
A message from Vanessa.
*My father has called an emergency meeting with his lawyers. He says the original agreement will be destroyed tonight. Daniel, there’s something I found in his office. It has your father’s name on it.*
A photograph followed.
It showed a brown envelope on Richard’s desk.
Across the front, in my father’s handwriting, were three words.
*Eleanor knows everything.*

Chap 8
At noon, I arrived at my mother’s house with Walter and a local attorney named Rebecca Collins.
Rebecca had represented small businesses in our county for nearly fifteen years. She had helped me establish my construction consultancy, and she was one of the few people I knew who had never seemed impressed by Richard Hale’s money.
When I called her that morning and explained that my mother was being threatened over a disputed property agreement, she asked one question.
“Have you preserved the original documents?””
When I told her we had found copies but not the original, she said, “Then don’t touch another thing until I get there.””
Now she stood in my mother’s kitchen, wearing a dark blazer and carrying a leather briefcase.
She examined the forged eviction notice, photographed the marks on the front door, and asked Mom to describe the men who had visited.
When she finished, she placed the notice inside a clear evidence sleeve.
“This document is going to be useful,” she said.
Mom looked worried.
“Useful how?””
“If the signature is forged, it could establish a pattern of fraudulent conduct. But we need more than suspicion. We need the original agreement, the property records, and evidence connecting Hale Development Group to the false filing.
””
Walter nodded.
“I have the original inspection records at the farm.””
“Good. Keep them secured. Do not give anyone access without a witness.””
Rebecca turned toward me.
“And you need to stop confronting Richard directly.””
I frowned.
“He came to the farm with men who were prepared to force their way inside.””
“Which is exactly why you need to let evidence do the talking. If this becomes a physical confrontation, he’ll use it to portray you as unstable.””
I didn’t like hearing it.
But I knew she was right.
Mom stood beside the kitchen table, twisting a handkerchief between her fingers.
“There’s something I need to show you.””
She walked into the living room and stopped in front of the old wooden cabinet that had belonged to my father.
It was a battered piece of furniture with a cracked drawer and a small brass handle.
Dad had built it from leftover timber when I was eight.
He used to keep his watch, spare keys, and folded receipts inside.
After he died, Mom never changed anything about it.
She opened the top drawer and removed a small wooden box.
“This was his anniversary gift to me,” she said.
I stared at the box.
I remembered it.
Dad had given it to her on their tenth anniversary, joking that it was the only thing he had ever built that didn’t wobble.
Mom had treasured it for years.
She placed it on the table and lifted the lid.
Inside lay a silver necklace, a faded photograph, and a small folded note.
Rebecca put on a pair of gloves.
“Let’s photograph everything before we move anything else.””
She took pictures of the contents, then asked Mom to read the note aloud.
Mom unfolded it carefully.
The handwriting was Dad’s.
My love,
If the day comes when I cannot protect you and Daniel, remember that the truth has a way of surviving even when people try to bury it.
The key is not the answer. The place it opens is.
Keep the promise we made beneath the old oak.
Mom stopped reading.
I looked at her.
“What old oak?””
She stared at the note.
“The tree behind the farmhouse. Your father and I used to sit there when we were dating.””
Walter leaned forward.
