Vanessa gave a sharp laugh.
“Oh, this is unbelievable. Do you know what my father just told me?””
“I don’t care.””
“He said the old Miller property has become a serious issue. There’s a development deal in progress, and your mother has been interfering.””
Mom went pale.
I looked at Vanessa.
“How do you know about the development deal?””
“My father is involved.””
“Involved how?””
“His company has been negotiating with the estate.””
“But you just said Walter was dead.””
“He is supposed to be dead.””
The words came out too quickly.
Vanessa froze.
So did I.
Mom slowly lifted her head.
“What did you say?”” I asked.
Vanessa’s lips parted.
“I meant the estate is being handled by his representatives.””
“No. You said he’s supposed to be dead.””
She looked toward the ballroom,
where Richard had appeared in the doorway.
“Daniel, stop twisting my words.””
“Why is your father involved in the Miller property?””
“Because it’s valuable land.””
“And why does he care whether my mother visits it?””
Vanessa stepped closer, lowering her voice.
“Because she has no business being there. She’s trespassing, and if she has convinced that old man to change anything in his will, my father could lose millions.””
My mother’s hand tightened around her purse.
I stared at Vanessa.
“You know Walter is alive.””
“I didn’t say that.””
“You just admitted it.””
She shook her head.
“Daniel, you’re exhausted. You’re hearing what you want to hear.””
Richard walked toward us.
“Vanessa, get inside.””
She turned to him.
“Dad, he knows about the property.””
Richard’s expression changed.
It was brief,
but I saw it.
The relaxed confidence vanished. His eyes moved to my mother, then to her purse.
“What have you told him?”” he asked.
Mom lifted her chin.
“Nothing that isn’t true.””
Richard let out a slow breath.
“Eleanor, you should have stayed out of this.””
I looked between them.
“You know my mother?””
Richard ignored me.
“You were asked to leave the property alone.””
Mom’s voice sharpened.
“And I told you that I wouldn’t abandon him.””
Richard took another step.
“You have no legal authority there.””
“Neither do you.””
“You don’t know what you’re dealing with.””
“I know exactly what I’m dealing with.””
Vanessa looked from her father to my mother.
“Dad, what is she talking about?””
Richard’s face hardened.
“Get in the car, Vanessa.””
“But—”
“Now.””
For the first time that evening,
Vanessa looked genuinely uncertain.
She glanced at me, apparently expecting me to follow her.
I didn’t move.
Richard turned to me.
“Daniel, this is a private business matter. Your mother has involved herself in something she doesn’t understand. I suggest you leave it alone.””
“Why?””
“Because I am trying to protect your future.””
“By threatening my mother?””
“By keeping you from making a disastrous mistake.””
I laughed once, without humor.
“You’ve known me for two years. You’ve known my mother for what, five minutes?””
“Long enough to understand that she’s putting herself at risk.””
Mom stepped forward.
“Don’t pretend you’re worried about me, Richard.””
His jaw tightened.
“Be careful, Eleanor.””
She didn’t flinch.
“No. You be careful.””
The silence beneath the awning was absolute.
Even Vanessa seemed to sense that something much larger than an argument was unfolding.
Mom opened her purse and took out the envelope.
She held it in front of Richard.
“Walter wrote this himself. He signed it. And he wants Daniel to know the truth about what happened to his father.””
My blood turned cold.
“What happened to Dad?””
Mom looked at me.
Her eyes were wet now, but her voice was steady.
“Your father didn’t die because his heart simply gave out, Daniel. At least, that’s not what Walter believes.””
Richard lunged for the envelope.
Mom pulled it back.
I caught Richard’s wrist.
“Don’t touch her.””
He looked at my hand gripping his arm.
Then he looked at me.
“You have no idea what you’re doing.””
“Then explain it.””
He yanked his arm free.
“I won’t discuss this in a parking lot.””
“Fine. We’ll discuss it somewhere else.””
Vanessa grabbed my sleeve.
“Daniel, stop. You’re embarrassing yourself.””
I turned toward her.
“Your father just tried to grab a letter from my mother’s hand. You think I’m embarrassing myself?””
She glanced at Richard, then back at me.
“He’s trying to protect our family.””
“From what?””
Neither of them answered.
Mom stepped away from us.
“I have to go.””
I turned immediately.
“I’m driving you.””
“No. You need to settle things here.””
“There’s nothing left to settle tonight.””
She gave me a sad smile.
“There’s always something left to settle, sweetheart.””
She walked toward her old silver sedan.
I followed her to the driver’s door.
Before she got in, she caught my hand.
