Then he said, “Some of the introductions were useful. He connected me with a property management group that hired us for several projects. But the last few months have been a disaster.””
“What happened?””
“I don’t know exactly. Payments were delayed. Some of the contracts he arranged fell through. The company still owes suppliers, and Dad says the business needs another fifty thousand dollars to stabilize everything.””
I stared at the page.
“Your father is the one who told you to ask me for the money?””
“He said you might be willing to help.””
I felt cold.
“Did he know you had already asked me for money before?””
Robert didn’t answer.
“Robert?””
“Yes.””
“How much did he know?””
“He knew you’d helped us with the house. He knew you’d supported the business.””
I pressed my hand against my forehead.
“And he thought I would give you another fifty thousand dollars?””
“He said family should help family.””
I almost laughed.
The man who had abandoned his family now wanted to lecture us about family loyalty.
“Does Holly know you’re working with him?””
“Yes.””
“Then why did she send me those messages about saving your household instead of explaining the actual situation?””
“She doesn’t know everything about the business.””
“Why not?””
“Because I didn’t tell her.””
That answer surprised me.
“Why would you hide it from your wife?””
Robert’s voice dropped.
“Because I knew she’d be angry. She never liked the idea of me working with Dad.””
I leaned back in my chair.
For once, Holly’s anger made sense.
But it didn’t excuse the way she had treated me.
“Robert, did your father tell you where the fifty thousand dollars would go?””
“He said it would cover urgent obligations.””
“Which obligations?””
“I don’t know the full breakdown yet.””
“Then why are you asking me to pay them?””
“Because he says we’re running out of time!””
His voice broke.
I heard a door close in the background.
Then Robert whispered, “Mom, I’m scared.””
The words reached me more deeply than all his earlier demands.
For a moment, I wanted to tell him everything would be fine. I wanted to promise that I would fix it, that he wouldn’t lose his home, that no matter what happened, I would protect him.
It was the promise I had made when he was twelve.
But he wasn’t twelve anymore.
“I’m sorry you’re scared,” I said.
“I really am.””
“Then help me.””
“I will help you understand what’s happening. But I won’t send fifty thousand dollars just because your father says it’s necessary.””
“Mom, please.””
“Ask him for a complete accounting of the money he’s received. Ask him for the contracts he arranged and the invoices he claims are outstanding. If everything is legitimate, the documents should help us understand the situation.””
Robert was silent.
Then he said, “He told me you’d react like this.””
I sat very still.
“What did he say?””
“That you’d use the situation to punish him for leaving.””
I felt something inside me harden.
“Your father doesn’t get to make himself the victim of decisions he made.””
“He says he regrets leaving.””
“Then he can begin by telling the truth.””
Robert didn’t respond.
I continued, “I am not going to pay him to return to your life. And I am not going to pay him to leave it again.””
The line remained quiet.
Finally, Robert whispered, “I don’t know who to believe.””
I looked at the contract.
“Then stop asking people to tell you what to believe. Start asking them to show you what is true.””
He ended the call a few seconds later.
I spent the afternoon reviewing the documents with Rebecca Shaw. She explained that the contract alone couldn’t establish whether the consulting company had fulfilled its obligations. We needed invoices, proof of services, and a complete account of the payments.
“Do you think your son has been defrauded?”” I asked.
“I can’t determine that from these papers,” she replied.
“But the arrangement creates a potential conflict of interest, and the company needs independent advice before transferring additional money.””
“Can we contact his father?””
“We can help your son prepare questions and review the responses. But he needs to be involved. It’s his company.””
I nodded.
That evening, I called Robert again.
He sounded defeated.
“I asked Dad for the invoices.””
“And?””
“He said he would send them tomorrow.””
“Good.””
“He also said he wants to speak with you.””
I stared at the wall.
“Why?””
“He says there are things you need to understand.””
