“The $32,000 transfer to Holly. Dad says it was a reimbursement for expenses she paid on behalf of the business.””
“Can he prove that?””
“That’s the problem. There are no receipts attached to the transaction.””
“Has Holly explained it?””
“Not yet.””
I looked toward the shelf where the birthday album stood.
“What are you going to do?””
“I’ve asked them both to meet me tomorrow. I want the records in front of everyone.””
“Are you sure that’s wise?””
“I don’t know. But I can’t keep pretending I don’t see what’s happening.””
I was quiet for a moment.
Then I said, “Whatever happens, don’t go into that meeting looking for someone to blame. Go looking for the truth.””
“I will.””
He paused.
“Mom, I want you there.””
I felt my chest tighten.
“You want me at the meeting?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because you’re the only person who’s asked me questions without telling me what I wanted to hear.””
I looked at the empty chair across the kitchen table.
For years, I had wished my son would invite me into his life.
Now he was asking me to step into a room filled with the consequences of his choices.
“I’ll come,” I said.
After we hung up, I pulled my old suitcase from the closet.
I wasn’t going to Miami to beg for a place at Ethan’s birthday table.
I wasn’t going to apologize for protecting myself.
I was going because my son had finally stopped asking me to save him blindly.
And because, somewhere beneath the anger and the fear, I still believed the little boy beneath the magnolia tree was worth fighting for.
I packed a clean blouse, a pair of comfortable shoes, and the folder of financial documents.
Then I placed the photo album on top.
I didn’t know whether Robert would ever understand what he had done to me.
But I wanted him to remember what he had once been.
The next morning, before I left for the airport, an unknown number called my phone.
A man’s voice came through the speaker.
“Mrs. Johnson? My name is Marcus Bell. I handle accounts for Sterling Lifestyle Consulting.””
I gripped the phone.
“All right.””
“I understand you’re reviewing payments made by your son’s company.””
“I am.””
“Then there’s something you need to know before you meet with Robert.””
My stomach tightened.
“What is it?””
He hesitated.
“The $32,000 transfer to Holly’s account wasn’t the only payment made to her.””
I stood perfectly still.
“How many were there?””
“Three that I can confirm from the records I was given.””
“And the other two?””
“One was for $14,000. The other was for $9,500.””
I looked at the suitcase beside the door.
Together, the payments totaled $55,500.
More than the fifty thousand dollars Robert had begged me to provide.
“Mr. Bell,” I said carefully, “why are you telling me this?””
“Because your son deserves to know where the money went.””
He paused.
“And because one of those payments was made on the morning of Ethan’s birthday.””
I felt the blood drain from my face.
“What was the payment for?””
His answer came quietly.
“It was a deposit on a property.””
“What property?””
“A condominium in Fort Lauderdale.””
“Whose name is on the purchase agreement?””
I heard him turn a page.

Then he spoke the words that made me reach for the edge of the table.
