Holly stood in the living room, wearing a pale pink blouse and holding a glass of water. Her expression hardened when she saw me.

“So you came.””

Robert set my suitcase beside the stairs.

“Mom is here because I asked her to be.””

Holly looked at him sharply.

“Of course she is. You’ve been discussing our finances with her behind my back.””

“I asked for financial advice.””

“From your mother?””

“From an accountant and an attorney, too.””

Her face flushed.

“You hired an attorney?””

“I’m trying to understand what happened to my company.””

She placed the glass on the table so hard that water splashed over the rim.

“You’re making me sound like a criminal.””

“No one has called you that,” I said.

Holly turned toward me.

“You should stay out of our marriage.””

“I would be delighted to stay out of your marriage if your husband hadn’t asked me for fifty thousand dollars.””

Her lips parted.

Then she looked at Robert.

“You told her how much?””

“Yes.””

“You had no right!””

“It’s my business, Holly. My debt. My responsibility.””

“And I’m your wife!””

“I know that.””

“Then why are you treating me like an enemy?””

Robert’s expression tightened.

“Because I found three transfers from my company to your account, and nobody has explained them.””

Holly went pale.

For one moment, the room was so quiet that I could hear the refrigerator humming in the kitchen.

Then she laughed.

A short, brittle sound.

“Is that what this is about?””

“Yes,” Robert replied.

“They were reimbursements.””

“For what?””

“Expenses.””

“What expenses?””

Holly crossed her arms.

“I don’t have to stand here and account for every dollar I spend.””

Robert reached into his bag and removed a folder.

“These payments came from the business account. If they’re legitimate expenses, we need the receipts.””

“You don’t trust me?””

“I want the documentation.””

“You’re my husband!””

“And I’m the person responsible for the company.””

She turned toward me.

“This is what you wanted, isn’t it? You finally got him to question me.””

I shook my head.

“No, Holly. I wanted to celebrate my grandson’s birthday. You made your choice that day. I’m making mine now.””

She stared at me, her mouth tightening.

Then she grabbed her purse.

“I’m not staying here while you two gang up on me.””

Robert stepped aside.

“Then come back when you’re ready to explain the transactions.””

She looked at him as though he had slapped her.

“You’ll regret speaking to me like this.””

She stormed out.

The front door slammed so hard that a framed picture rattled against the wall.

Robert stood motionless.

I could see his hands trembling.

After a moment, he sank onto the sofa and covered his face.

“Mom, what have I done?””

I sat beside him, leaving a little space between us.

“You made decisions. Some were good. Some may have been mistakes. Now you have to face them.””

He lowered his hands.

“What if she really did take the money?””

“Then you will need to establish what happened and decide what to do based on the evidence.””

“What if I lose her?””

I thought about the years I had spent trying to protect him from the pain of his father’s abandonment.

“You cannot save a relationship by refusing to look at the truth.””

He stared at the carpet.

Then he whispered, “I think Dad knew about the condo.””

“Why?””

“Because when I asked him about the payments, he said Holly had made arrangements for her future. He told me not to worry about it.””

I turned toward him.

“Did he say anything else?””

Robert nodded slowly.

“He said I should stop trying to control Holly’s money.””

“Did you ask why your company was paying it?””

“Yes.””

“What did he say?””

Robert’s eyes filled with tears.

“He said I was too much like you.””

I felt a coldness settle over me.

Not because the words were insulting.

Because I recognized the tactic.

Daniel had spent years making me feel unreasonable whenever I asked him to take responsibility. Now he was using the same strategy against his son.

Robert wiped his face.

“I need to talk to him.””

“Then talk to him. But don’t go alone if you feel intimidated, and don’t sign anything you don’t understand.””

He nodded.

That night, I slept in the guest room.

At 11:30 p.m., I heard footsteps in the hallway.

Robert knocked softly on the door.

“Mom? Are you awake?””

“Yes.””

He opened the door and stood there holding an envelope.

“I found this in Holly’s desk.””

I sat up.

“What is it?””

“An agreement related to the condominium.””

He handed it to me.

The document appeared to be a purchase agreement accompanied by a separate financial arrangement. I read the first page, then the second.
