“When I asked you for fifty thousand dollars, I told myself I was doing it for my family. I made it sound like you were the only person who could save us.””
He looked down.
“But I hadn’t even told you the truth about the company. I hadn’t explained what was happening or shown you the documents. I wanted you to trust me with your savings while I was refusing to trust you with the facts.””
I felt a lump rise in my throat.
“That was unfair.””
“Yes.””
He took a breath.
“I’m sorry.””
I reached for his hand.
“Thank you for saying that.””
He held my hand tightly.
“I can’t promise I’ll never make another mistake.””
“I wouldn’t expect you to.””
“But I can promise that I won’t ask you to prove your love by sacrificing your security.””
I looked at him for a long moment.
“That means more to me than the money ever could.””
He nodded, and I could see that he understood.
Not completely. No one learns every lesson at once.
But enough to begin.
That evening, after Holly and Ethan had gone to bed, Robert and I sat on the back porch.
The air was cool, and the garden smelled of damp earth after a brief shower.
He looked toward the magnolia tree.
“Do you remember what I told you when I was little?””
“That you’d buy me a huge house?””
He smiled.
“Yes.””
“I remember.””
“I used to think money was the answer to everything. If I made enough, I’d never have to feel helpless. Nobody could tell me what to do. Nobody could make my family feel small.””
He picked at a loose thread on his sleeve.
“I think that’s why I was so determined to build the company. I wanted to prove I could make something of myself.””
“You did make something of yourself.””
He looked at me.
“Even if the company fails?””
“Your company is something you built. It isn’t the whole of who you are.””
He stared into the garden.
“I wish I’d understood that before I let Dad back in.””
I considered my answer.
“Perhaps you needed to learn it in your own way.””
“Did you ever wish you’d handled things differently with him?””
“With your father?””
He nodded.
I thought about the years of arguments, the loneliness, the fear of raising a child alone, and the long stretch of silence that followed Daniel’s departure.
“Of course. There were things I said in anger that I wish I could take back. There were times when I let my resentment affect the way I spoke about him. I tried to protect you, but sometimes I was so afraid you’d be hurt that I forgot you had a right to form your own opinions.””
Robert turned toward me.
“Did you ever think about telling me everything he had done?””
“Yes.””
“Why didn’t you?””
“Because I wanted you to have the chance to know your father for yourself. I didn’t want my pain to become the only story you ever heard about him.””
Robert was quiet.
“Maybe I confused giving him a chance with giving him control.””
“Perhaps.””
He exhaled slowly.
“I don’t know if I’ll ever forgive him.””
“You don’t have to decide tonight.””
“What if he never apologizes?””
“Then you may have to make peace without the apology you deserve.””
Robert looked at the tree again.
“That’s what you did, isn’t it?””
“Eventually.””
He nodded.
For a while, we sat without speaking.
Then he said, “I’m glad you didn’t give me the money.””
I turned toward him.
“You’re glad?””
He smiled faintly.
“I hated it when you refused. I thought you were abandoning me. But if you’d given me fifty thousand dollars that night, I probably would have used it to keep everything looking the same.
I wouldn’t have asked the right questions. I wouldn’t have confronted Dad. And I might have lost your savings along with the company.””
I felt tears gather in my eyes.
“I didn’t want you to suffer.””
“I know.””
He reached for my hand.
“But I needed to learn that love doesn’t mean someone else has to carry every burden for me.””
I squeezed his fingers.
“That’s true.””
The following morning, Robert, Holly, and Ethan prepared to leave.
Ethan hugged me three times before climbing into the car.
“Grandma, can I come back for Christmas?””
“Of course, sweetheart.””
“Can I bring my dinosaur pajamas?””
“Especially those.””
He giggled and climbed into the back seat.
Holly stood beside the passenger door.
“Thank you for having us.””
“You’re welcome.””
She hesitated.
“I know things aren’t fixed.””
“No, they’re not.””
“But I’d like to keep trying.””
I looked at her.
