“Then start with the truth. It may be uncomfortable, but it’s the only place you can begin.””
She wiped her eyes.
“I also want Ethan to see you.””
My throat tightened.
“Does he know I’m here?””
“Yes. I’ve told him Grandma came back.””
“What did you tell him about the birthday?””
Holly looked toward Robert.
Then she answered.
“I told him I made a mistake.””
I felt tears gather behind my eyes.
It wasn’t enough to undo what had happened, but it was a beginning.
That evening, Robert drove me to his sister-in-law’s house, where Holly had been staying with Ethan.
My grandson came running down the front steps as soon as he saw me.
“Grandma!””
I dropped to my knees and opened my arms.
He crashed into me, wrapping his little arms around my neck.
I held him tightly.
“Hello, my sweetheart.””
“Why didn’t you come to my birthday?””
The question broke my heart.
I looked into his eyes.
“I came, baby. But the grown-ups made a mistake, and Grandma had to go home.””
He frowned.
“Did you bring my present?””
I smiled through my tears.
“I did.””
I carried the photo album inside and placed it on the coffee table.
Ethan opened it carefully, turning the pages with his small fingers.
He laughed when he saw his father with missing teeth.
“Daddy looked funny!””
Robert sat beside him.
“I certainly did.””
Ethan pointed at the photograph beneath the magnolia tree.
“What’s that tree?””
“A magnolia,” I told him.
“Did Daddy climb it?””
“Once,” Robert admitted.
“And Grandma had to help me get down.””
Ethan burst into laughter.
Robert looked at me over his son’s head.
For the first time in a long while, I saw the boy I had raised in the man sitting beside me.
Not because he had become successful.
Not because he had promised to repay my sacrifices.
Because he was finally willing to tell the truth about himself.
Later, after Ethan had gone to bed, Robert walked me to the guest room.
“Mom, I need to ask you something.””
“What is it?””
“If the business survives, I’m going to rebuild it differently. Smaller, maybe. No more borrowing money because someone promises me quick growth. No more letting other people make decisions I don’t understand.””
I nodded.
“That sounds wise.””
“And I’m going to repay the money I borrowed from you, as much as I can. I’ll work out a proper schedule with the accountant.””
I studied his face.
“You don’t have to repay gifts I gave you freely. But if there are loans we agreed you would repay, then yes, we should make a plan.””
He swallowed.
“I want to do it properly.””
“Then do it.””
He looked down at his hands.
“And I want you to know that when I asked you for fifty thousand dollars, I thought you would give it to me because you always had.””
I waited.
“I didn’t think about what it would cost you. I didn’t think about how much you’d saved or what you’d need in your own future. I just thought you were my mother, and you would fix it.””
I felt the familiar ache in my chest.
“Robert, I will always be your mother. But that doesn’t mean I can fix every problem.””
“I know.””
He looked up.
“I should never have shut that door on you.””
“No,” I said softly.
“You shouldn’t have.””
He nodded, tears gathering in his eyes.
“I’m sorry.””
This time, I didn’t rush to reassure him.
I let him sit with the weight of his words.
Then I reached for his hand.
“I forgive you, Robert. But trust will take time.””
“I understand.””
“And if you want to rebuild our relationship, you need to remember that love isn’t measured by how much money someone is willing to give you.””
He squeezed my hand.
“I’ll remember.””
The financial problems did not vanish overnight.
The attorneys continued reviewing the financing agreements, the accountant reconstructed the transactions, and Robert began negotiating with suppliers and creditors. The questions surrounding Meridian and Sterling would take time to resolve, and there was no guarantee that the company would emerge untouched.
Holly’s condominium purchase also required further examination. She would have to explain the payments, provide the supporting records, and work with the attorneys to determine what obligations remained.
Daniel tried calling Robert several times.
Robert didn’t block him.
But he refused to sign anything new without independent legal advice.
For the first time in his life, he understood that forgiveness did not require surrendering his judgment.
As for me, I returned to Dallas a few days later.
Robert drove me to the airport.
Before I got out of the car, he reached into the back seat and handed me the photo album.
“You forgot this.””
