“Then you should have told me you were worried.””

“I did tell you!””

“When?””

“Months ago!””

Robert looked down.

I could see the possibility that she was telling part of the truth. Perhaps she had warned him about their spending. Perhaps he had ignored her concerns because he wanted his business to succeed.

But none of that explained the secret transfers or the agreement involving their house.

He lifted his head.

“Did you intend to sell our home?””

Holly’s lips trembled.

“I intended to have options.””

“Without telling me?””

“I thought you’d understand eventually.””

Robert shook his head.

“I’m trying to understand now.””

She stood up again and began pacing.

“You don’t understand what it’s like to live with a man who thinks every problem can be solved by working harder. You were always at the office. You missed dinners.

You missed Ethan’s school events. I was the one holding everything together.””

Robert didn’t interrupt.

“I wanted security,” she continued.

“I wanted something that couldn’t disappear if your next project failed.””

I looked at her.

“Holly, wanting security isn’t wrong. But why did you refuse to let me see Ethan on his birthday?””

She turned toward me.

“Please don’t start.””

“I am asking you a question.””

“You have nothing to do with this.””

“I had nothing to do with the condo, either. Yet your husband was calling me at two in the morning asking for money to protect the life you were secretly trying to escape.””

Her eyes filled again.

“You don’t know what happened in this house.””

“Then explain it.””

She looked at Robert.

He waited.

Finally, she whispered, “Your father said if we didn’t act quickly, the business would drag us all down.””

Robert leaned forward.

“What exactly did he promise you?””

Holly hesitated.

“He said he could arrange the condo purchase and help us sell the house before creditors became a problem.””

Robert stared at her.

“Creditors?””

“He said it would be easier to protect the money if we moved it before the business situation got worse.””

“Did he say that in writing?””

“I don’t know.””

“Did he tell you where the money would come from?””

She didn’t answer.

Robert stood.

“Holly, I need the truth. Did you know the transfers were coming from my company’s operating account?””

Her silence lasted too long.

Then she whispered, “Yes.””

Robert closed his eyes.

I could hear him breathing.

“Did you know we had unpaid suppliers?””

“Yes.””

“Did you know I was considering asking Mom for money?””

Holly looked at me.

Then she nodded.

Robert took a step backward.

“You knew I was going to ask her for fifty thousand dollars while you were using company money to buy another property?””

“I didn’t know you would ask her that night!””

“But you knew I was asking her for help!””

“I thought your father was going to fix everything before it got that far!””

Robert stared at her.

“Why would he fix it?””

Holly looked confused.

“Because he said he wanted to help us.””

Robert gave a hollow laugh.

“He abandoned us. He spent twenty years refusing to answer my calls. Then he came back when I had a successful company, and suddenly he wanted to help.””

He turned toward the window.

“I should have known.””

I stood beside him.

“Knowing someone has hurt you before doesn’t mean you’re foolish for hoping they’ve changed.””

He shook his head.

“I ignored everything you told me.””

I touched his arm.

“You made your own decision. Now you can make a different one.””

Holly watched us.

Then she picked up her purse.

“I’m taking Ethan to my sister’s house.””

Robert turned.

“Wait. We need to discuss the documents.””

“I can’t do this anymore.””

“Neither can I. But leaving won’t make the questions disappear.””

She stared at him.

For a moment, I thought she might sit down again.

Instead, she said, “You have chosen your mother over me.””

Robert’s expression hardened.

“No. I’m choosing to find out what happened to my company.””

She grabbed her keys and walked toward the door.

Before leaving, she looked at me.

“I hope you’re happy.””

I met her gaze.

“I hope Ethan has two parents who can tell him the truth.””

She slammed the door.

Robert stood in the middle of the room, his shoulders sagging.

Then he looked at the agreement on the table.

“Mom, I need to call my attorney.””

“Yes.””

“And I need to tell the accountant to stop all payments to Sterling until we understand the contracts.””

“Ask your attorney how to do that properly.””

He nodded and reached for his phone.

As he began making calls, I sat quietly in the kitchen.
