“There was a balcony.””
My breathing became shallow.
“What are you saying?””
“I’m saying Emily slipped.””
“Because of you?””
“No!””
Vanessa’s voice suddenly broke.
Everyone froze.
She covered her face.
“No.””
Then quieter:
“No, I didn’t push her.””
I stared at her.
Because that was the first time she had answered a question I never asked.
Mason looked horrified.
“Mom…”
Vanessa wiped her eyes.
“I know what it looks like.””
“It looks like you were there.””
“I was.””
“It looks like you hid it.””
“I panicked.””
My voice became cold.
“You let me believe it was a random accident.””
“I was scared.””
“You let me raise Lily without knowing she saw it.””
“I thought she would forget.””
My fists clenched.
“She was two.””
“Yes.””
“She was a baby.””
“Yes.””
“Then why did she remember?””
Vanessa looked toward Lily.
“Because children remember fear.””
The sentence hurt because it was true.
And maybe that was the worst part.
My daughter didn’t remember details.
She remembered feelings.
The shouting.
The fear.
The person who was there.
I turned to Lily.
“Sweetheart.””
She looked at me.
“Do you remember that night?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I remember Mommy crying.””
My heart broke.
“Which mommy?””
She looked at Vanessa.
Then down.
“Not Vanessa.””
The room went silent.
“My real mommy.””
I sat beside her.
“What else do you remember?””
Lily hugged her rabbit.
“Mommy told me to hide.””
“Who told you?””
“My mommy.””
I felt a chill.
“Why?””
She whispered:
“Because she said Vanessa was angry.””
Vanessa closed her eyes.
Mason stepped back.
I looked at him.
“Did you know?””
He shook his head.
“No.””
His voice was broken.
“I knew Mom was hiding something.””
“But not this?””
“No.””
I stood.
My phone buzzed.
Another message.
This time from the unknown number.
*You have enough to understand what happened. But you don’t have the final piece.*
Then another message appeared.
A location.
A place I recognized.
Emily’s old storage unit.
My heart stopped.
*She left the real evidence there.*
I looked up.
Vanessa was staring at my phone.
And when she saw the location, all the color disappeared from her face.
“You can’t go there.””
I narrowed my eyes.
“Why?””
She didn’t answer.
“Why can’t I go there?””
Her voice dropped.
“Because if you open that box…”
She stopped.
“What?””
She looked terrified.
“Because you’ll find out the reason Emily trusted you less than you think.””
I stared at her.
The sentence cut deeper than anything else.
Because suddenly, I wasn’t just searching for what Vanessa had hidden.
I was searching for what Emily had never told me.
I grabbed my keys.
And as I walked toward the door, Mason followed.
“Dad.””
I turned.
“I’m coming with you.””
I hesitated.
“Mason, this could get dangerous.””
He looked back at his mother.
Then at Lily.
“I know.””
His voice was quiet.
“But I think we’ve been scared of her long enough.””
We stepped outside.
The night air hit my face.
But before I started the car, my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
A man’s voice spoke.
“Michael, don’t go to that storage unit.””
I frowned.
“Who is this?””
The man paused.
Then said:
“The person who helped Vanessa hide what happened that night.””
My hand tightened around the phone.
“Why should I believe you?””
May you like
His answer came immediately.
“Because I was there when Emily died.””
