“I was there when Emily died.””

The stranger’s words froze me.

For several seconds, I forgot how to breathe.

The car door was open.

The keys were in my hand.

Mason was standing beside me.

And inside the house, Vanessa was watching through the window.

But suddenly, none of that mattered.

Because the past I had buried for three years had just walked back into my life.

“Who are you?”” I asked.

The man on the phone stayed quiet.

Like he was deciding how much truth I could handle.

“My name is Daniel.””

The name meant nothing.

And somehow, that made me more nervous.

“What did you have to do with Emily?””

A long pause.

“I was her attorney.””

I tightened my grip on the phone.

“Her attorney?””

“Yes.””

“Emily never told me she had an attorney.””

“I know.””

That answer sent a chill through me.

“How?””

“Because she was afraid.””

I looked back at the house.

At Vanessa.

“What was she afraid of?””

Daniel sighed.

“Vanessa.””

My jaw tightened.

“Why?””

“Because Emily found out Vanessa wasn’t just connected to that company scandal.””

I waited.

“She found out Vanessa had been moving money for someone else.””

My stomach turned.

“What?””

“Emily discovered financial records. She planned to report everything.””

I thought about the letters.

The evidence.

The folder.

The years of secrets.

“What does that have to do with Lily?””

Daniel’s voice softened.

“Everything.””

I looked at Mason.

He was watching me carefully.

“Explain.””

“Emily knew something would happen.””

My heart stopped.

“What do you mean?””

“She knew Vanessa was desperate.””

“Desperate enough to hurt her?””

Daniel didn’t answer immediately.

And that silence said more than words.

“Where were you that night?”” I asked.

“I was supposed to meet Emily.””

“Supposed to?””

“Yes.””

“What happened?””

“She called me.””

“When?””

“Minutes before the accident.””

My chest tightened.

“What did she say?””

Daniel’s voice became quieter.

“She said, ‘If anything happens to me, make sure Michael knows Lily is the key.’”

I looked toward the house.

“Lily?””

“Yes.””

“What does that mean?””

“I don’t know.””

“You were her attorney.””

“I was.””

The answer sounded heavy.

“What are you not telling me?””

Daniel sighed.

“Emily didn’t trust anyone anymore.””

The words hurt.

Because I had spent years believing Emily trusted me completely.

“She trusted me.””

“She loved you.””

The correction was gentle.

“But love and trust aren’t always the same thing.””

I felt like I had been punched.

“What are you saying?””

“I’m saying Emily was protecting you.””

“From what?””

“From a truth she thought would destroy your family.””

I looked at Mason.

Then at Lily through the window.

A child who had already lost so much.

“Where is the evidence?””

“The storage unit.””

“I’m going there.””

“No.””

The answer came sharply.

I frowned.

“What?””

“You cannot go there yet.””

“Why?””

“Because Vanessa knows.””

I looked back.

She was no longer at the window.

A bad feeling moved through me.

“How do you know?””

“Because she called me ten minutes ago.””

My blood ran cold.

“She called you?””

“Yes.””

“What did she say?””

Daniel hesitated.

“She said you found the video.””

I felt my stomach drop.

“How does she know?””

“She has been watching you.””

The words sounded impossible.

But after everything I had discovered, nothing felt impossible anymore.

I turned toward the house.

The lights were still on.

But Vanessa wasn’t visible.

“Mason.””

He looked at me.

“Take Lily and wait in the car.””

His expression changed.

“What?””

“Now.””

“Dad, what’s happening?””

I lowered my voice.

“I don’t know.””

That was the truth.

And I hated admitting it.

“But something is wrong.””

I walked back toward the house.

“Mason, keep the doors locked.””

He nodded.

I entered through the front door.

The house was silent.

Too silent.

“Vanessa?””

No answer.

I walked through the hallway.

The office door was still open.

The folder was gone.

My stomach tightened.

She had taken it.

I looked around.

The laptop was missing too.

The evidence.

The recordings.

Everything.

She knew.

A sound came from upstairs.

I froze.

“Vanessa?””

Nothing.

I climbed the stairs slowly.

Every step felt louder than it should.

At the top of the stairs, I saw her.

Standing in the bedroom.

Holding something.

A small box.

The same box from the office.

“What are you doing?””

She turned.

Her eyes were red.

But she wasn’t crying.

She looked exhausted.

“Trying to fix what I ruined.””

I stared at her.

“Where are the files?””

“Gone.””

“You deleted them?””

“No.””

She looked at the box.

“I moved them.””

“Why?””

“Because if you found everything at once, you would never listen to me.””

I almost laughed.

“You think I should listen?””

“I think you deserve the truth.””

“Now?””

Her face tightened.

“I was scared.””

“You keep saying that.””

“Because it’s true.””

I stepped closer.
