“Then why didn’t you go to the police?””

Her eyes filled with shame.

“Because I had my own secrets.””

There it was.

The thing that had controlled her.

Fear.

Guilt.

Shame.

All of it.

But none of it changed what happened.

“You let me bury my wife without knowing the truth.””

“I know.””

“You let Lily grow up thinking she lost her mother in an accident.””

“I know.””

“You let me marry someone who knew more about my life than I did.””

Her eyes closed.

“I know.””

I turned away.

Because I couldn’t look at her anymore.

My phone buzzed.

A message.

This time, not from Daniel.

A photo.

My brother.

Standing outside my house.

Today.

My blood froze.

Below the photo was a message:

*You finally found the truth.*

Another message appeared.

*Now come alone if you want to keep Lily safe.*

I stared at the screen.

My heart raced.

He was here.

Somewhere close.

I looked out the bedroom window.

The street was dark.

Empty.

But someone had been watching.

“Michael?””

Vanessa stood up.

“What happened?””

I didn’t answer.

Because I knew.

This wasn’t just about the past anymore.

The person who had been hiding was finally stepping forward.

I walked downstairs quickly.

Mason stood when he saw my face.

“Dad?””

I looked at him.

“Take Lily upstairs.””

His expression changed.

“Why?””

“Just do it.””

He nodded immediately.

That was how scared he was.

He didn’t question me.

He took Lily’s hand.

“Come on.””

She looked back at me.

“Daddy?””

I forced myself to smile.

“It’s okay, sweetheart.””

But she knew.

Children always know.

She squeezed Mason’s hand and walked upstairs.

Then I heard it.

A knock.

Three slow knocks.

Everyone froze.

Vanessa whispered:

“He’s here.””

I looked at her.

“You know him.””

She didn’t deny it.

The knock came again.

I moved toward the door.

“Don’t open it.””

I stopped.

Vanessa’s voice shook.

“Michael.””

I turned.

“What?””

She looked terrified.

“Your brother didn’t come here to explain.””

The lights suddenly flickered.

My phone buzzed.

A final message.

*Open the door. I need to tell you why Emily really died.*

My hand reached for the lock.

Then Vanessa whispered the words that made me stop.

“Because if he tells you first…”

I looked at her.

“What?””

Her face went pale.

“You’ll never believe my side of the story.””

The knocking stopped.

The silence was worse.

Then a voice came from the other side of the door.

A voice I hadn’t heard in three years.

“Michael.””

My blood ran cold.

“Open the door.””

I knew that voice.

I had heard it at my wedding.

At my father’s funeral.

Holding my daughter as a baby.

My brother.

May you like

And then he said the one thing that made my entire body freeze.

“I know what Vanessa did to Lily.””
