“Your own brother, Michael.””
The words hit me harder than anything Vanessa had ever said.
For a moment, I couldn’t process them.
My brother.
Daniel’s voice echoed through the phone.
The room felt smaller.
The walls felt closer.
And Vanessa was standing across from me, watching my face as if she already knew what was happening.
“Say that again,” I whispered.
Daniel was silent for a second.
“Your brother was Lily’s biological father.””
I looked at Vanessa.
She closed her eyes.
That reaction was all I needed.
She knew.
“You knew.””
My voice wasn’t loud.
It didn’t need to be.
Vanessa opened her eyes.
“Michael…”
“You knew.””
She swallowed.
“I found out later.””
“Later?””
I laughed once.
A broken sound.
“Later than what?””
“After Emily died.””
I stepped back.
The person who had been lying to me was standing in front of me.
But suddenly, there was another person I needed answers from.
My own brother.
The man who had stood beside me at Emily’s funeral.
The man who held my shoulder and told me we would get through it.
The man who had hugged Lily.
“Where is he?”” I asked.
Vanessa didn’t answer.
“Where is my brother?””
“I don’t know.””
I stared at her.
“Don’t lie to me.””
“I’m not.””
Her voice cracked.
“He disappeared.””
“Convenient.””
She looked down.
“I thought he was gone forever.””
“Thought?””
I grabbed my phone.
“Daniel.””
“I’m here.””
“Tell me everything.””
A long silence followed.
Then:
“Emily found out six months before she died.””
My heart tightened.
“About my brother?””
“Yes.””
“Why didn’t she tell me?””
“Because she was scared.””
“Of me?””
“No.””
Daniel’s voice softened.
“Of what would happen if the truth came out.””
I looked at Lily’s room.
My daughter was sitting downstairs.
Waiting.
Not knowing her entire life had just been turned upside down.
“What does my brother have to do with Vanessa?””
Daniel sighed.
“That’s the part Emily was investigating.””
I gripped the phone.
“Investigating?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because your brother and Vanessa were connected.””
The room became silent.
“How?””
“They were involved in the same financial situation Emily discovered.””
My mind raced.
The company.
The stolen money.
The secrets.
Everything was connected.
“Are you saying they planned this?””
“I’m saying Emily believed they were hiding something.””
“Did she have proof?””
“Yes.””
“Where?””
“The storage unit.””
I looked at the flash drive in my hand.
“The one Emily left?””
“Yes.””
I looked at Vanessa.
“Why did you try to stop me from going there?””
Her face changed.
Because she knew I had reached the question she couldn’t avoid.
“I was afraid.””
“Of what?””
“Of what you would find.””
I stepped closer.
“You mean evidence.””
She didn’t answer.
“Vanessa.””
She looked at me.
“I didn’t kill Emily.””
I stared at her.
“You keep saying what you didn’t do.””
Her eyes filled.
“Because I know what it looks like.””
“Then tell me what happened.””
She sat down on the edge of the bed.
For the first time, she looked small.
Not powerful.
Not controlling.
Just someone who had carried a secret too long.
“Your brother and I knew each other before you.””
I felt my stomach tighten.
“How well?””
She looked away.
“Too well.””
I closed my eyes briefly.
I didn’t want details.
But I needed the truth.
“Were you together?””
She didn’t answer.
She didn’t have to.
My chest tightened.
“All those years…”
“I didn’t know Lily was his.””
“Stop.””
She looked at me.
“I didn’t.””
“Then how did you find out?””
“Emily told me.””
I froze.
“What?””
“Emily came to me.””
“Why would she do that?””
“Because she thought I deserved to know.””
I shook my head.
“Why?””
Vanessa’s eyes filled.
“Because she knew about me and your brother.””
The pieces were falling together.
Slowly.
Painfully.
“Emily knew.””
“Yes.””
“And she still came to you?””
“She wanted to understand.””
I looked at her.
“Understand what?””
“That Lily had been raised by the wrong story.””
I stared.
“She was never trying to take Lily from you.””
The words shocked me.
“What?””
Vanessa looked down.
“She wanted you to know the truth.””
I thought about the letter.
The video.
Emily’s words.
*Michael needs to know the truth.*
“Then why didn’t she tell me?””
Vanessa whispered:
“Because your brother threatened her.””
My blood went cold.
“What?””
“He told her if she exposed him, he would ruin your life.””
“How?””
“I don’t know.””
“You expect me to believe that?””
“I saw him threaten her.””
“Where?””
“The night she died.””
Everything stopped.
The night she died.
The words I had spent years avoiding.
The night I never wanted to remember.
“What did you see?””
Vanessa looked at me.
“I saw them arguing.””
“Emily and my brother?””
“Yes.””
“Where?””
“Outside her house.””
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
She looked away.
“Because I was afraid.””
“Of him?””
“Yes.””
