Ten minutes later, I stood inside Vanessa’s bedroom.
Not because I wanted to invade her privacy.
Because my daughter’s safety mattered more than her secrets.
The room looked exactly like it always did.
Perfect.
Clean.
Organized.
Almost too perfect.
Vanessa was someone who controlled everything.
The pillows.
The decorations.
The schedule.
The people around her.
Especially the people who couldn’t fight back.
I opened the top drawer of her nightstand.
Nothing.
Second drawer.
Nothing.
Then Mason spoke from the doorway.
“Try the jewelry box.””
I looked at him.
“Why?””
“Because she hides things where she thinks nobody will look.””
I opened it.
Underneath a layer of necklaces and earrings was a small silver key.
My stomach tightened.
I picked it up.
Behind me, Vanessa whispered:
“Michael.””
I turned.
She was standing there.
And she looked different.
Not angry.
Not confident.
Desperate.
“Please.””
That one word surprised me.
“What?””
She swallowed.
“You don’t understand.””
“Then explain.””
She looked toward Lily.
Then lowered her voice.
“I made mistakes.””
I almost couldn’t believe it.
“Mistakes?””
She nodded.
“I was overwhelmed.””
“So you locked food away?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I didn’t mean for it to go that far.””
That sentence stayed with me.
Because people don’t accidentally become cruel.
They make choices.
One after another.
And then they call the consequences a mistake.
I walked past her.
Back to the office.
The key slid into the lock.
Click.
The sound echoed through the hallway.
Everyone stopped breathing.
I opened the door.
At first, I didn’t see anything unusual.
A desk.
A bookshelf.
A computer.
Then I noticed the wall.
Photos.
Dozens of them.
My stomach dropped.
They were pictures of Lily.
Eating.
Playing.
Sleeping.
Crying.
Standing alone.
Some were taken from far away.
Like someone was hiding while taking them.
I stepped closer.
My hands became cold.
Beside each photo were notes.
Small handwritten notes.
*Manipulates attention.*
*Cries when corrected.*
*Needs less comfort.*
*Learns quickly when punished.*
My vision blurred.
This wasn’t a journal.
This was a file.
A file about my daughter.
I moved toward the desk.
There was a laptop sitting open.
A video folder was on the screen.
I clicked it.
Hundreds of files appeared.
Dates.
Times.
Names.
My chest tightened.
Mason covered his mouth.
“Oh my God.””
I clicked the first video.
The screen showed Lily sitting alone at the kitchen table.
She was crying.
Vanessa’s voice came from behind the camera.
“Tell me why you’re crying.””
Little Lily looked up.
“Because I’m hungry.””
Vanessa sighed.
“You always want something.””
I immediately closed the laptop.
I couldn’t watch anymore.
I didn’t need to.
I knew.
I knew exactly what was happening.
Then Mason whispered:
“Dad…”
I looked at him.
“There’s something else.””
“What?””
He pointed toward the bottom drawer of the desk.
“I saw her put something there yesterday.””
I opened it.
Inside was a folder.
Thick.
Much thicker than the notebook.
The label on the front made my blood turn cold.
Because it wasn’t about Lily.
It was about me.
The folder was titled:
*MICHAEL — EVIDENCE.*
And underneath that title was a sentence written in Vanessa’s handwriting:
*Preparation for custody battle.*
My hands froze on the folder.
A second later, my phone buzzed.
A new message appeared.
Unknown number.
One sentence.
*She was never trying to be Lily’s mother. She was trying to take your daughter away from you.*
I looked up at Vanessa.
She was standing in the doorway.
And she wasn’t crying anymore.
She was smiling.
A small, terrifying smile.
May you like
Because she knew I had found the folder.
And she knew I had just discovered the next part of her plan.
