The hidden letter.
The videos.
I looked at Vanessa.
“You recorded my daughter.””
Her expression changed.
Just slightly.
“I recorded situations.””
“She was crying.””
“Because she was upset.””
“She was hungry.””
“Because she refuses boundaries.””
I stepped forward.
“Food is not a boundary.””
Her eyes hardened.
“You don’t know what it’s like.””
“What?””
“To raise someone else’s child.””
The sentence hung in the air.
Mason looked horrified.
“Mom.””
Vanessa immediately looked away.
But it was too late.
She had finally said what she really felt.
Not my daughter.
Someone else’s child.
I grabbed the folder.
“You’re leaving.””
She blinked.
“What?””
“You heard me.””
She laughed.
“You can’t just kick me out.””
“This is my house.””
“And we’re married.””
“Not for much longer.””
Her face changed.
The confidence disappeared.
“You wouldn’t.””
I looked at her.
“I don’t know who you are anymore.””
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Then Vanessa reached into her pocket.
And pulled out her phone.
My stomach tightened.
“What are you doing?””
She smiled.
“I’m making sure you understand something.””
She tapped the screen.
Then turned it toward me.
A recording was playing.
My own voice filled the room.
A recording from weeks earlier.
Me.
Tired.
Frustrated.
Saying things I barely remembered.
“I don’t know how much longer I can handle this.””
My face went cold.
Because the recording was real.
But it wasn’t what it sounded like.
I remembered that night.
I had been exhausted.
Lily had been having nightmares.
Work had been overwhelming.
I had told Vanessa I felt like I was failing everyone.
But she had cut out everything else.
Only the part that made me sound unstable.
“You’ve been recording me too?”” I asked.
Vanessa lowered the phone.
“I told you.””
Her voice was quiet.
“I prepare.””
Mason looked sick.
“Mom, what are you doing?””
Vanessa ignored him.
She looked at me.
“You think you’re protecting Lily.””
She smiled.
“But I’ve been protecting myself.””
I looked at the folder in my hand.
Then at the laptop.
Then at the woman standing in front of me.
And suddenly, everything became clear.
The food.
The punishments.
The videos.
The evidence folder.
None of it was random.
She wasn’t losing control.
She was building a case.
She wanted Lily to look difficult.
She wanted me to look irresponsible.
She wanted to become the victim.
I walked toward the door.
“We’re leaving.””
Vanessa’s expression changed.
“You’re not taking Lily anywhere.””
I stopped.
“What?””
She held up her phone.
“Because tomorrow morning, you’re going to receive a call from my lawyer.””
The hallway went silent.
Lily grabbed my hand.
“Daddy?””
I looked down at her.
“It’s okay.””
But my voice didn’t sound convincing.
Because deep down, I knew.
This wasn’t over.
Vanessa had planned everything.
And she wasn’t finished.
As I walked downstairs with Lily and Mason behind me, my phone buzzed.
Another unknown number.
Another message.
I opened it.
And the words made my blood run cold.
*Michael, before you fight Vanessa, you need to know the truth about Lily’s mother’s death.*
I stared at the screen.
My fingers went numb.
Because nobody had ever questioned how Lily’s mother died.
Everyone told me it was an accident.
But the next message arrived seconds later.
*Vanessa was there that night.*
I looked back toward the stairs.
Vanessa was still standing in the doorway.
Watching me.
May you like
Smiling.
And for the first time, I wondered if the woman trying to take my daughter away from me had been hiding a secret much darker than I ever imagined.
