The voice outside the door belonged to my brother.
The same voice that had comforted me when Emily died.
The same voice that had held Lily at her mother’s funeral.
The same voice that had told me, “I’ll always be here for you.””
Now it stood outside my house.
Carrying secrets.
Carrying years of lies.
And somehow, the strangest part was that I didn’t know who I was more afraid of.
The man outside.
Or the woman inside.
I looked at Vanessa.
She looked back at me.
For the first time, neither of us had anything left to hide.
The door remained between us and the truth.
Then my brother knocked again.
“Michael.””
His voice was calmer now.
Almost gentle.
That made it worse.
Because I knew that voice.
It was the voice he used when he wanted people to trust him.
I unlocked the door.
But I didn’t open it.
I stepped back.
“Come in.””
The door slowly opened.
And there he was.
Andrew.
My older brother.
His hair was shorter than I remembered.
His face looked older.
Tired.
But his eyes were exactly the same.
The same eyes I had trusted my entire life.
He stepped inside.
His gaze moved around the room.
Then stopped on Vanessa.
Neither of them spoke.
That silence told me everything.
They weren’t strangers.
They weren’t people who had simply crossed paths.
They knew each other too well.
“Michael,” Andrew said quietly.
I stared at him.
“Why are you here?””
He looked at Vanessa.
Then at me.
“Because it’s time.””
I almost laughed.
“Time for what?””
“For you to know the truth.””
I shook my head.
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
I pointed toward Vanessa.
“She said it.””
I pointed toward the phone.
“Daniel said it.””
Then I looked at him.
“And now you’re saying it.””
My voice became colder.
“But somehow, everyone has a different version.””
Andrew looked down.
“I deserve that.””
That surprised me.
Because I expected excuses.
Not acceptance.
“I’m not here to defend myself.””
“Then why?””
He took a breath.
“Because Emily left something for me too.””
My eyes narrowed.
“What?””
He reached into his jacket.
And pulled out a small envelope.
My heart stopped.
Because I recognized the handwriting.
Emily.
Again.
“How long have you had that?””
Andrew looked at it.
“Three years.””
My anger exploded.
“You had a letter from my wife for three years?””
“I was scared.””
“Everyone is always scared.””
My voice shook.
“My wife died. My daughter lost her mother. I spent years wondering if I could have saved her.””
Andrew closed his eyes.
“And I spent years knowing I couldn’t undo what I did.””
The words caught me.
“What did you do?””
He looked at Vanessa.
Then back at me.
“I lied.””
The room went silent.
“About what?””
“About Lily.””
I felt my chest tighten.
“Say it.””
Andrew swallowed.
“Lily is my biological daughter.””
The words still hurt.
Even though I already knew.
But then he continued.
“But she is your daughter too.””
I frowned.
“What does that mean?””
Andrew looked at the floor.
“Emily and I made a mistake before she married you.””
I felt sick.
The pain was real.
But there was something else.
Something I didn’t expect.
Anger toward him.
Not because of Lily.
Because he had stolen my choice.
My ability to know the truth.
“Did Emily love me?””
Andrew looked up.
Immediately.
“Yes.””
The answer came without hesitation.
“She loved you more than anyone.””
“Then why?””
“Because she was afraid.””
“Of what?””
“Of losing you.””
I looked away.
Andrew continued.
“She found out she was pregnant after she ended things with me.””
I closed my eyes.
“She chose you.””
“Why didn’t she tell me?””
His voice cracked.
“Because she knew you.””
I looked at him.
“What does that mean?””
“She knew you would love Lily.””
I swallowed.
“But?””
“She was afraid you would never look at her the same way.””
The words hurt because they sounded exactly like Emily.
She always carried other people’s pain before her own.
“What about Vanessa?””
Andrew’s expression changed.
“She was part of my worst decisions.””
Vanessa looked away.
I stared at him.
“Explain.””
Andrew sighed.
“After Emily found out about the financial scheme, she confronted me.””
“The company.””
He nodded.
“Yes.””
“You were involved.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
His face tightened.
“Because I was desperate.””
I shook my head.
“So you betrayed Emily.””
“Yes.””
“You betrayed me.””
“Yes.””
“And Vanessa helped you.””
Andrew looked at her.
“She did.””
Vanessa whispered:
“I was scared.””
I looked at her.
“You keep saying that.””
“I know.””
She wiped her eyes.
“But being afraid doesn’t excuse what I did.””
It was the first time she had said that.
No excuses.
No blame.
Just the truth.
Andrew continued.
“Emily discovered everything.””
“The money.””
“Yes.””
“The affair.””
“Yes.””
“The threats.””
